I'm no expert, but those damn sure look like termites to me.

Termites, terrestrial. Not close to the house is it?!!! Call exterminator. Stop them now..... Save some and put them on an egg hook for trout!!! :smt006

my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

it's called a "hatch", they grow wings, fly to some new/rotten wood and set up new colonies.  :smt009
usually after rain, when the sunshine warms up their nest.

It was coming from a patch of bricks on the walkway.
Tore up all the bricks and hit everything that was under it with a torch.
There was some collateral damage; a few worms, a couple pill bugs, but that dirt is very dry now. As I was churning the soil I was torching it. Those little critters vaporize fast! Most seemed to be on the surface once the bricks were moved, but I went down several inches to feel better.  :smt044

Subterranean termites? I had those at a previous home. I believe you can buy stakes to help control them.

Welcome Spring time!

Typically termite nests are usually feet under ground (5'-20').

If they were 20' underground I wouldn't give an FRA! (FRA may become a yacronym if you don't know what it means)  :smt044
It's when they are on the surface or inside of the wood on my house that I'm concerned.

Termites for sure but your probably safe, pretty easy to see if there termites in the house, start poking the 2x4s with a heavy paint scraper and looking for termite shit where it would pike up. They don't live in the house they eat, they all commute and take shifts, and they eat 24/7. Spraying a barrier helps a lot. Flying like that is how they spread, the queen waits till the million horny males can fly, then off she goes and only the strongest male can fly as high and then he gives her some strong ass termite-spunk. Its the Way.

Have the ground treated ASAP. Then have your house tented just in case. Not as pricey as you might think. Worth the piece of mind.

And I think they are ants. :smt002
