We repainted our bathroom with mold resistant primer, then painted over it in latex.  Still mold appears to grow on it, but at least i'm fairly sure it's on the outside, not inside the walls.  Wipes off easily enough.  I try and always run the bathroom fan with the door closed, but try as I might, Quinn and Sara only do this on occasion it seems...

What about trying some of the water absorbing things like DampRid:

Thanks for the tips. That dehumidifier looks like it would suck up some major electricity.

Do some research on the ozonator. My only regret is I didn't get one sooner.
I swear by it.

They won't ship those to California anymore.  I tried amazon and several stores on eBay, all say no go.

RE: dehumidifiers: I had a large consumer-grade one in my last place's basement that I ran all the time. After getting tired of it turning off when the bucket was full, I put it over a utility sink to drain.

It probably pulled out a gallon plus a day depending on how humid it was. It also raised the temperature a few degrees and definitely pulled a decent amount of start-up current (house lights dimmed when it kicked in), but man, it was so worth the extra energy costs and it worked great for the 5 or so years I lived there.  About half the size of a dorm fridge.

Now I'm not sure if I should spend the money and wire an automatic fan, or run a dehumidifier. The fan seems like something I won't be able to do before I leave and the dehumidifier has to be emptied. I hope at the least some decent mushrooms grow in my absence.

Bleached and scrubbed less than a week ago...

Install a Panasonic 110 cfm fan with humidistat. $150.  Stop using bleach and use a fungicide, bleach does nothing to kill mold.  Get yourself some physan.

Yeah read up on ozone generators. Very effective, but will eat rubber and plastics very quickly also....

No I got under the house and checked. I think it's just that it's a tiny bathroom with terrible ventilation in a very humid place. It's fine during the summer.  But all winter long I deal with scrubbing it non stop.

Looking at the Panasonic fan. Sure hope the drywall doesn't need to come out...

That needs a paint job. With a first coat of any of the above described high performance anti mold primers, and after the first, skim the walls/ceiling smooth with some mud, hide all those nooks and crannies the mold is growing on, they two more coats of prime and two finish coats of high end bathroom low luster/eggshell or satin., with sanding in between coats.  Semi gloss is way too shiny, low luster is the way to go. That will kill the shit. But you need to keep it low humidity or it will grow back, with smooth walls its a hell of a lot easier clean, just use a clorox whipe.

Theres a good chance that there is black mold in the wall cavity, it would explain the quick recovery of the mold...that would kind of suck....
