Just curious...did you tie dropper loops on for a shrimp fly above your bottom jig? I had problems in the past with those creating points of weakness...cuz I wasn't tying them correctly...just a thought.

Congrats again!!

Also how do you guys store your fish on your kayak if you are going to be out all day? I was keeping mine on a d ring in the water while I fished and throwing them in the tankwell while I paddled

burlap bag in the well clipped with/to the stringer .splash water or I give em a dunk now and then ,never had a problem

This. Hanging over the side in the salt is just inviting furbags and other unwanted interlopers.

Yeah I tried that once and busted it off on a snag. After that I was just tying straight to one lure at a time

Nice Job for a first time! The lings live in the rocks. Set the hook and get them away from the bottom as fast as you can. Fight them mid water, away from the bottom or they will dive into the rocks and break you off.

Maybe it was because of the jeans.

My routine is similar to dtizz.

1) Land fish
2) Bonk
3) Bleed (cut gills and swish around in the water until bleeding stops)
4) Place fish in cooler bag with ice (mine is the Inshore Kill Bag made by Sea Angler brand).
5) While pedaling in at the end of the day, I gut the fish and put them back in the bag. (If it's slow, I sometimes just gut them right after bleeding).

I used to bleed first then bonk.  Now I ikejime.  If done properly you don't have to deal with rigor, and it's supposed to be more humane.

Full on ikejime is a pretty time consuming endeavor. Are you just spiking their brains then bleeding at the gills? Or doing the whole deal (spiking brain, cutting spinal cord, cutting off tail and threading a wire, etc)?

Just spiking the brain at this point.

http://www.ikijime.com/

I do want to get a sharpened piano wire for threshers and leopard sharks, but I'm not sure its necessary for rockfish or lingcod as long as you get the fin flare when you spike the brain.

I bleed...no bonk...once those gills are ripped/cut they are on their way out quickly...and it gives me a moment of connection with the fish as well...

You can knife the membrane right along the outside of the gills as well for the same result...

If I don't want/need a pic of fish (for DOTY etc) I'll gut as well and get the blood along spine out...

As long as you get the blood out and keep them wet and cold you should be all good until get back to shore....just don't leave fish exposed drying out in back of yak while chill on beach...bums me out when I see that...all leathery with flies on it.  :smt012

Cool. I'd be curious to try a taste test comparison between my current method and a full-on ikejime. I understand that lactic acid can have a negative effect on fish quality, but I'm really happy with the end results I'm getting.

I can see this being more important on sharks and tuna - both of which can have a strong taste if not handled properly.

Sure, nature was giving him a break. If the knots/leader/whatever had held and a giant Ling had made a run for it, then he coulda gone in the water and we know where that might end given the lack of immersion protection . . . .  :smt003
