The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope.  ~John Buchan

Geez. Those people on the rocks weren't terribly bright either. Don't put yourself in a compromising position if you can't help. Just makes it worse for rescuers.

Wow, I thought most sailboats have like a small 4-9hp outboards. Pfd def saved their lives.

I watched a long version of that, and wondered why their boom and mainsail were down in the cockpit, and a crewman seemed to be trying to hold onto the jib (looked more like a genoa) sheet ("rope") way up near the mast.  Maybe the wind came up real suddenly and strongly and they just dumped the sails and then couldn't get the boom or mainsail back onto the mast when they realized they weren't going to just ride it out or drift  to the sand (and not pier), and maybe the jib sheet had come out of the fairlead block on the side of the boat and they couldn't reach down to get it back in so that they could get it back to the cockpit and onto a winch.
As windy as it was in Nor Cal that night, my guess is that it was pretty snotty when they headed out, along with at least a decent swell then.
In hindsight, they probably wish they had abandoned ship before getting so close to the pier, but they probably thought they could still save the boat and then a big swell hit them.  And they do say to always stay with the boat.
There is another small boat in the background at the beginning of the video and it seemed to be handling things O.K., though it still looked like it was one small mishap from disaster.
Even if they just weren't experienced, and I can't tell what else was going on that we can't see, they did one big thing right: wore their PFD's!
Reminds me of a page I saved from a desk calendar of "365 Rules":  "Rule of the way out: Always leave room for a way out."  I think of it when I'm launching in marginal conditions (Or deciding which ski trail to take.  Or thinking about WAF)!

Inexperienced sailors..  Probably just took a class, but never encountered  high winds like that before.

It sure was a damm nice boat.... :smt010

Damn lucky they didn't get slammed into the pier themselves.
What an absolute feeling of helplessness watching someone's impending doom.
Glad no one died.
The boat sure got wrapped around the pier though didn't it?

4 really lucky sailors right there. Slammed hard into the pier without injury is really a miracle.
