Looking for input on a sabiki rod. Pros? Cons? Fished with a sabiki rig on a light spinning rod and that worked great but also hooked everything else on the yak! Thanks

Bought an inexpensive 6' sabiki rod from Walmart.  Worked fairly passing.  Found that the opening of the bell tip was to small causing flies to occasionally stick.  Most pre-strung rigs were to long for the length of the rod and had to be shortened.  Also, takes up a rod holder that could be better used for a REAL rod.  I wasn't sad when it went missing out of it's rod tube on the top of the truck somewhere by Coco's corner.

Someone here MADE theirs from a piece of PVC pipe, and a spin reel attached w/ pipe clamps. Check the DIY section of the Forum.

The other poster's comment is fair, so a hand line setup would be pretty ideal too since a Sabiki rig just gets jigged up and down right under/off the boat. What to do with those dang hooks?  I would get one of those short winding tubes with the rubber covers; an easy and cheap alternate to which would be to wind the rig around a 6" or 8" length of pool noodle (each hook gets buried into the rubber/foam).

Cut your store bought sabiki down to 3 or 4 hooks.

What is the maximum number of hooks allowed? I know there are some issues related to using more than one rod while fishing for certain species with a one rod limit.

I always cut at least two hooka in between. Sometimes more, depending on the swells. Its a pain as it is getting it out of the pack, let alone having to deal with tangles when you got a couple shiners or smelt on there fluttering around.

If you're just fishing for macs/sardines/etc with no other fish aboard it's not a question of legal number of hooks. But I personally hate dealing with 6' of line with a hook every foot. I generally split my sabiki's in 1/2 @ the middle and tie on new swivels on the cut ends. 3 hooks is much easier to deal with, especially with a multiple hookup. It makes sure I can deal with the caught bait in a way that keeps them swimming longer.

Exactly  :smt002

So if you have fish on board and run out of bait you can only use two hooks to get more. And you can't fish for bait while you have a rod in for restricted species?

No max hooks for any fish unless you have salmon or rockfish on-board (or are targeting them), then you have to adhere to the gear restrictions for those species.

My take on a Sabiki rod is they are nice to have, convenient that they store the hooks and all that, easy to deploy and easy to keep ready when you come across a bait ball.

However when going out on the salt, less is more :smt002  And if I am going to target live bait specifically for fishing I'm probably going for something like halibut or WSB that I want to use 2-3 rods for drift fishing.  Having a 4th rod is a bit much to me (although, there are plenty of people that take 6 rods out).  You can just use any rod, or what I prefer a medium spinning rod that can double as a flyline for drifting the bait.

That and sabiki's are like $2-3 bucks, and I usually cut them in half and use them 2-4 times.

If you put a heavier weight on the bottom you'll have less trouble with fluttering fish fouling your fishing fun...
