Will it be alright to use a Coleman stove to heat up something I'm bringing?

We currently have 47 people registered. I would expect to at least break 60 this year with the onsite registration.

could we get a peak at the list of participants?

Probably not, I only have real names from paypal and I don't feel right posting them, especially since most of them don't make any sense in the context of everyones handle.

Boosted this from the sniffer boards, this is simply to give people who haven't been there a heads up, ignore the unmentioned letters....this is by no means a tutorial, sole navigational tool, or secret fishing spots....if I mention your honey hole its because its a common spot and not secret at all.

The reported bait is inside the harbor walls.  Halibut (slim chance still a little early) will be in the channel at wall F to G, inside.  Try and fish the NE edge as the drop off is more defined. Word of cation.....BEWARE OF BOAT TRAFFIC BEWARE OF BOAT TRAFFIC BEWARE OF BOAT TRAFFIC.  It doesn't matter who has the right of way, you are a smaller craft so get out of the way.  Surfer Beach is just east of spot J, probably the last place I'd fish but very protected.  Spot G occasionally breaks, doesn't sound like it'll be a problem with the current conditions.  Between D & E is very shallow, probably not the best place to be.  Most fish will come from the SW of the DEFG area because the structure/kelp is there.  Its also the place that sleepers will sneak out of nowhere and break on high points so be cautious.  Mavericks is south of D, slightly SW of the rock outcroppings, don't know what the weather was like the day of the photo but its usually not that bad out there.  Green can is slightly further sw of Mav reef.  If you want to err on the side of caution there is usually kelp and rock beds close to the wall on the outside of the EFG area that you can poke around in.  There's various markers to the south east of the jaws where there's high spots as well but use caution there as well.
Art, thanks for posting this.  It's a good guideline for safely fishing HMB.

Another FYI to those unfamilar with HMB -- the DEFG area is bordered by buoys like the Green Can for a good reason -- to keep boaters away from the shallow reefs and boilers.  Last year, I saw lots of first time ocean kayak fishermen blindly follow very experienced guys like Chef out through the mine field.  Most were okay, but a couple guys took a swim.  Follow your healthly fear instincts and use a little common sense and all should be fine.

Thanks for the map!  It helps a lot!

I have two more newbie questions about rules and regs:

1.  Is my kayak sail allowed, or paddle only?

2.  Do I have to bend the barb on all my hooks down, or is this only for a specific species of fish or area?

Finally, I'm not sure where to gather, load/unload, and park.

Thanks!

the rule says

1]   The tournament is open to kayaks, paddleboards or any other human powered vessels only.  No motors allowed.

So I guess that would mean you have to paddle in order for your vessel to be "human powered."

Barbless hooks are only necessary for salmon.  Most likely prey in that area is Rockfish, Cabezone, and ling cod with greenlings being a possibility.  you can download the saltwater regs from DFG website.  We also have a couple discussions in these forums about regs for this year.  If in doubt, call out on your radio.

Maybe look up Half Moon Bay kayak co and then google map it for specific streets and such.  i can get there, but can't describe it.

Look forward to meeting you and others at the Derby!

Allen

Here are the directions to HMB Kayak Company:

http://www.hmbkayak.com/contact_info.html

Also when I got in today the water looked really good, no whitecaps, no swell. I will have a better report tomorrow.

If you have anything you would like to add to our raffle, just bring it to the derby.   It's all very much appreciated and goes to a very worthy cause -- the future of our sport.

My son Eric and I plan to drive over to visit and watch the festivities.

I'm also bringing a few items for the raffle donated by Holt of California. Can we buy tickets to the raffle if we aren't in the derby?

Al

BobN just called me at 8am from the parking lot "c" across from the HMB Kayak Company.  He said it's absolutely flat as glass on the water, no wind, no swell, no fog, and the sun is starting to warm things up nicely.

Let's hope the fine conditions hold out for our derby.

Bob said he's the only one in the lot right now and he's getting ready to prepare a batch of his famous chili.
