With all the rain and wind we have been getting since October, the Shelter Cove road has taken a major toll. We've had many mud slides, trees down, and a few wash outs that has caused difficulty getting in or out. The latest was the wash out below Huckleberry Hill where the have installed a temporary bridge.
Many people thought the road was "treacherous" coming to the cove before .... Let's just say the the journey to GS in 2017 will be a new experience if major work is not done by then.
As of now, plan on 3 stop signs and one lane stretches as well as a stoplight on top of the hundreds of pot holes during your journey from Garberville to Shelter Cove.

Was just thinking about Shelter Cove and that road. Thanks for the update Eric.

What about the cove itself. How are Lower and Upper Pacific fairing?

Is there a lot of run off from the mountains into the residential area?
Lower and upper Pacific as well as the general area has held up well, a few downed trees and a few new potholes. Aside from that, a few shingles blown off the roof, but nothing major.
Also,
The Crab fleet is having a heck of a time finding their pots and pulling them out of the sand on the good days.
Life in interesting in the Cove

Steph, thanks for the offer.  With all this rain, my free ranging chickens spend most of the day hunkered down in the garage.  It's a little far for you to travel just to clean up their droppings so I'll give you a pass on the offer.  Seriously, you're generating some good fishing karma.

We're going on 50 hours without power, phone or internet. Thank goodness for the generator setup we installed and the water tanks and gravel. We spent a bunch of $$$ preparing for an El Nino that didn't appear....until this winter.
Monday all roads in the Doon were closed with big trees and the largest mud/rock slides I have seen since moving here in 2000. Also Monday the wind snapped the top off of a utility pole and left it dangling in the road about 300 feet from my driveway.
That night 3 redwood branches came down from about 75 feet up, all three were about 30 feet long and 10" thick at the fat end. Fortunately they missed the cars and house, though one did nail my shed roof dead center. We have plans to demo the shed anyway, so could have been a lot worse.

the normally dry creek below my house is a rushing maelstrom now, about 20 feet wide and 2 feet deep. This drainage usually has a only few inches of water in it during the winter.

Main issues in my neighborhood now are all access related, so with a couple of clear days I have hope that the trees and mud can be cleaned up some.

That description could fit Redwood Estates just about word-for-word. We're at 45+ hours without power or internet (except via smartphone hotspot, which is lucky or my kids would have driven me bonkers by now). Several big trees have come down on the roads here. And, the small seasonal creek (flows into Lexington Reservoir) near my house looks like the Missouri River. Luckily, our house is well protected from south winds, so nothing serious directly affected us.

Just lookin out for my fellow brothers and sisters  :smt006 Lots of close calls so far from what I have read, glad you guys are all safe. I had a little bit of pooling in my yard but my house is pretty elevated so I've been fortunate so far. There's a huge Redwood in my back neighbors yard that if it fell would probabbly end up right in my yard, about 70 feet tall yikes.

Hearing about these big trees falling is so scary and no way of really knowing when they will fall. The road to GS I hope will be safe to drive in May, looking forward to it!

I'm good , but my buddy floods with the high tide everyday for the past few weeks. He can only get off his island when the water goes down.

Damm Tote,,,   get ready for some white water runs.

I'm way above the low water flooding that Aptos got hit with.   But in twenty years never seen anything like this here on my hill.    Seen 6 trees come down in just a little over a week.  Each time the power lines go with it.  Road closed  again for past two days, only way in or out is to walk it...   Getting my excercise.

As a resident of the same neighborhood as Jim as I can say its been crazy.  Ive never been afraid of trees before.  While none have hit my property, my truck was narrowly missed by one.  My neighbors were not so lucky.

A lady in Ukiah recently died when a large tree fell on her house so there is reason to be concerned.

That was a completely awful story.  She lived in fear of that tree for months then it killed her, but not immediately, and she was alive long enough to know that her fears had been realized.  It made me ill reading about that.

Concentrated the birds for an epic late goose! Only effect on us. Daddy told me to not build my house in a damn hole ;)

Spent the night at a friend's house filling and stacking sandbags.  Narrowly escaped disaster as the Coyote Creek just touched a corner of his house before receding.  Thanks to Jeff Engleton for randomly stopping by with sandbags and lending a hand.  And everyone else that rallied.  We won this round!

That's great news!

Here's a pic of what we were up against.  That's the neighbors shed in the water.  Normally you can't even see the creek from here, as it's behind that far row of trees.  This is in the neighbors back yard, but my buddies fence is just behind us, his home not far behind that and certainly not much higher up.

This is how my afternoon went.  Shovel, lift, shovel, lift.

Stacked them up strategically against the house in the lower areas, buying my buddy a foot or 2.  This isn't quite filled in yet, but we got there.

In the end, it all turned out good!

Yes, Crescent City has had more than its share of rain. 68" as of two days ago. 104" In Gasquet which is 20 miles east of here. Thank God we don't have any damn dams or reservoirs to worry about.

I'm ready for winter to be over! We are on restricted water usage as there's nowhere for the water to go. It's pooling in my back yard and covering the septic field. Not fun. Wifey wants to go to Arizona...or anywhere!

I need to go perch fishing...or crabbing....or get wood....or anywhere. I may have to start substitute  teaching! Nah, it ain't that bad.

I'm getting cabin fever and I don't even live in a damn cabin!

I think there may be cracks in the sky! Is there a Greek god of the rain? I wish he'd go to Hell and let us dry the hell up!

Flooding from my creek is not a problem as its about 120' down from my yard.  So we're not too affected by it.
Fortunately, I've been away in AZ. working through the biblical deluge that happened for the last 3 weeks I was gone.(Otherwise I'd be commuting through it, or trying to?)  Poor wife was home surviving it all until, once again, one her fears happened.
Another tree fell from across our normally little creek, but just before that happened the power went out!  Fortunately this time the tree fell on our neighbors property, missing, or not reaching his buildings.  This Fir that fell, shook our house when it landed,(Wife said) and frayed the last nerves in her!  The trunk looks to be about 3' across and about 100' long!  It took out 3 to 4 small tan oaks on our side.  We (She ) was fortunate enough to only loose power for about 3 hours that day throughout the last 3 weeks of rains.
I can only hope that those of you still without power can get it back soon!
As far as flooding, the heavy amounts of rain that fall on my property, we see some areas on my driveway, and lower yard that started to pool up some.  Looks like I'll be digging come summer, to put some drain lines in.
