Boy, this is really terrible, and we knew it would happen sooner or later.  There will be a lot of people affected by this...flooded out of their relatively new homes.  Levee breaches are expected to allow Bay flooding all the way down to Modesto!  And as we speak, these cash-starved counties continue to allow the farmers to sell out to developers, like Pombo, who keep on building entire subdivisions at or below sea-level, right in harm's way.  Despicable, greedy, devils.   :smt011

Easy now. Don't blame the farmers for cashing out. I heard that some farmers plugged this levee breach with their excavators already.

No doubt, it's a tough call, but the greed starts somewhere.  I would prefer keeping farm land as exactly that, or as open space, for lots of environmental and quality of life reasons, but then we bump into ownership rights.  That's why I really pin a lot of responsibility on the counties who allow rampant development in known flood zones.  Some of these high hazard areas aren't even eligible for flood insurance, so FEMA (read that as you and me and every other American) does the payola when these communities get whacked.  This is the definition of corporate welfare; the developers get rich with no risk because you and I pay for it -- just shameful and expensive.

If they would just pay us for our development rights and let us keep farming would be great. I'll take my 6 million, retire now and keep the farm!

I agree with you on the developers tossing some rock on a levee and then building a housing tract is total BS.
