Anybody know if there is a season of the year that urchins produce the best roe? I grabbed the urchins primarily for a friend who tried to order Uni at a sushi restaurant and was told that they are "out of season". I wasn't sure if that meant that the eggs are better at different times of the year or that they weren't being commercially harvested at this time of the year.

Here's some info I found....

In southern California, most spawning occurs in winter. In northern California, spawning occurs in spring and summer (Parker and Kalvass, 1992)

The sea urchin season in Japan lasts only from April to September, but most urchins are consumed for holiday festivities in December and January. The sea urchin season in Maine lasts from September until March, providing a cold-weather replacement supply for Japan and a new seasonal catch for Maine lobstermen when the lobster catch slows down.

We camped at the state park and it was more than half empty all weekend(?) No idea why. The lot at the beach was a lot more full on sunday.
I went out with a carpenter from work, turns out he grew up not far. Got my limit in like 6 minutes in 15 feet of super clear water then hunted for a ling. saw a bunch of rf and a few greenling but spared them till I can hook them. I just really wanted to shoot a big ling.
We ate one ab at the camp, tenderized and braized whole, with much butter and garlic that we baked in the fire the night before. Van Damm good.
Launch and landing was easier the a lake.
