I believe a FF with a GPS is the only way to go, especially on the ocean.  And it's not a bad idea to have a backup handheld GPS in the pocket of your life vest.  GPS is not only handy for marking those special fishing spots but I use mine on the ocean to watch the speed and direction of my drift.  I use a Lowrance Elite 4 CHIRP unit and it does everything I need.  However I wouldn't mind a larger screen at times.

The key to a good FF and GPS is knowing how to use it thoroughly.  Be sure to read the owners guide and before you hit the water get familiar with all the settings, so you know how to use them in a pitch.

Absolutely get the GPS. It has many uses. When you look at the amount of money we can spend on the sport, the added cost is a small fraction.

Keep your eyes peeled for sales and clearances.  Last year when getting ready to buy a second transducer + power cable to be able to move the head unit between kayaks, I found a Lowrance Elite 4 HDI on sale for $10 more than the cables would cost - with a $25 rebate!

GPS is handy for the mapping features that come with it, but never hit the ocean without a good compass onboard. Not just one of those cheepos that clip to your vest

Carry multiple GPS and compass.  Think about a redundant radio too.  2 is one, one is none.  The fog gets thick around here and can come up out of nowhere.

I think the key to a good FF is following your buddy who knows how to use one LOL !!!!!! GPS is nice to get back in when the fog comes in and they leave you, but, i will have a Hobie this year !!!
