Bought a boat this year, all I can say now is. I'm a pretty good boat mechanic.... it's expensive.  20k is a lot of boat money. You can get a pretty good decent one for 10k. I'm considering selling mines to upgrade to a 19' montauk or outrage. Don't do much lake fishinggg but I'm sure the montauk can handle it just fine. With the boat I have now it's just mainly inshore and river, deltas....  some of those Lund and alumaweld boats are pretty nice too.

Suggest finding a boat with a really goood outboard. Preferably Honda or Yamaha, evinrude e-tec. I have a mercury and it can be a handful so far I've rebuilt just about everything but the engine n carbs.

Good advise here. Besides being a money pit unreliable motors take the fun out of fishing. Not fun drifting the kelp line and wondering if your outboard is going to start again or running 10 miles up or down the coast in a remote area and hoping you make it back.

Try to find a recently re powered boat if you can where someone else put the money into it and got two footitus.

My friends recently bought a montauk with a brand new Yamaha F70 for 9k. Smoking deals are out there.

This one I think is worth looking at

http://sacramento.craigslist.org/boa/5986228169.html

thats a great looking boat! Glad someone brought this up since I'm interest in getting a boat as well. Would be nice to get the gf and dog out on the water or friends for that matter.

I have the standard garage with a pass through to the backyard where it will be housed. But getting it through the front it has to be under 7 foot tall. The length doesn't matter since I can pull it to the backyard lol

In Oregon
Seems overpriced. I paid 13 for mine, with a 4 stroke, and it was a 2000 model.  I saw another two this year for sale around $11-12k with 4S.  They're nice boats, but not perfect for everyone.  Not a hardcore fishing boat.

Like another poster said, check out Arima boats. They are a great fit for California waters. The 17 footer would be a great all-around boat.

I was a bit concerned buying a used boat, since I have very little experience and wouldn't know whether I'm getting a good deal or not.

Right now I'm leaning towards freshwater only. I can't really imagine myself doing much ocean fishing on a boat. But overnight lake trips with my brother and dogs? Definitely can see myself doing a ton of that.

At first I didn't think I cared about being protected from the elements. But I might want to at least avoid some wind and get some shade. A bass tracker type boat  with a sun shade I can take down would be good. Wind... it doesn't seem like it'd be tough to add wind protection but I don't think I'd be out that much in the wind.

I'm interested in what short of challenges you think I'd have with a boat, bmb. I'm trying to think of one that I don't already deal with as a kayaker, so maybe there's something I'm completely unaware of.

Hearing problems with the engine would be one.  You might be able to feel some of the problems, but may not be able to understand them if you're relatively new with running them.  Most important thing with an outboard that has problems is to shut that thing down right away. Most warning signals with outboards are not visual cues, they are buzzers and sirens and things like that.

Being on anchor and not being able to hear other boats coming from behind you would be another-like freighters don't move out of the way for boats anchored in a channel and usually just sound horns to tell you to move.  Not being able to hear verbal cues from other boaters (horns, radio chatter, etc) could be an issue as well.  Being in a kayak doesn't matter as much as we tend to be a little more careful of our surroundings just from the virtue of our size and need to protect ourselves.

I do not think it would be "unsafe" for you to boat as a deaf guy, you just have to make sure to do it smartly, like, for example, not anchoring in a channel where there is other traffic.  I wouldn't hit the ocean or the bigger delta without a hearing capable friend, but the local south delta should be fine.

An Arima would be a good choice as well - I was looking at some last night and thinking about it.  Just have to make sure they can clear your garage on trailer, so nothing with a hardtop.  I wouldn't buy a tracker, too many reliability issues.  If you wanted a small aluminum to kick around in Freshwater I'd look for a Lund, Hewescraft, Alumaweld, Crestliner, Klamath, etc.  something like an Alumaweld with a soft top could work out really well for you if you want out of the elements sometimes.  The sun is our worst enemy as fishermen so there's nothing wrong with a bimini top. Figure out what you really want first and we can help you decide.

The offer still stands to go out with me on my boat, so you can see what it would be like to prep, launch and run it for a bit solo.  Just let me know. The reason I fish from my kayak more often is that I fish solo a lot and find it a lot cheaper and less work than taking the boat.

Ben

I have a deaf friend who boats in the ocean regularly on a Boston Whaler, I'll talk with him on how he tackles navigational issues. And yeah, as a general rule I'm going to avoid boat traffic areas for sure. If for no other reason than as a preventive measure. And see what he has to say about engine issues. His boat has two outboard engines and a trolling motor, I'm guessing that helps because it'd be more likely that one breaks down so he can get back on the other one on an emergency.

I'd love to go out, it's just difficult for me since I never know if I have the weekend off until the day before. And I may have a job coming up to hold me up for a few weekends. But I'll start checking in whenever it looks like the weekend is available. I'd love to get some experience and of course would help with the costs. Thanks!

Definitely have a ton to look into. I wasn't set on the tracker, I just thought the boat design style looked good. I'll look into those recommendations!
