We played dart chicken.
One guy would stand in the doorway of the shed while 3 or 4 others would chuck darts at him. The idea was to jump inside the shed just as the darts landed on the shed.
I caught one through the hand once while protecting my face from a dart some dick weed threw late.
Hand swelled up pretty good, but I still have my eyes.

I grew up next to a walnut orchard. Those green walnuts hurt like hell. So much fun!

had to have surgery to remove a bb from my hand, but no lasting effects other than maybe 5% loss of range of motion in one finger :)

Airsoft wars are popular today---both of my kids have done that. Way safer than bb gun fights...

Live your life, the way you want to be remembered. Don't have any regrets, we only get this one dance to make it count. Start at your eulogy, and work backwards.

Mumbly Peg
We played 3 versions;
1. Take a pocket knife and place feet about shoulder width apart.  Throw knife at your foot.  Closest to his foot without hitting foot wins.
2. flip knife off various parts of your body to stick knife in ground.  Such as fingers, wrist, elbow, etc.  Sorta like H O R S E, but with a knife instead of a basket ball
3. Stretch; where you toss knife at your outer foot and have to stretch your foot to the knife until one person can't reach.
Every boy over 8 had a pocket knife.

Bottle rocket wars.  We used garbage can lids as shields.
Roman candle wars too.

Dirt bike jousting;
contestants square off equal distances from a large mud puddle on a dirt road.  At a signal, they charge toward each other on their motorcycles.  Upon reaching the mud puddle, wheelie though and if you got there first, you douse the other guy in muddy water and don't get muddy from his later blast though the mud.

Train Track
We would sneak out after parents went to bed, all the kids in the neighborhood.  We'd go down to the river where the train tracks crossed the river.  We'd go out to the middle.  When we heard a train, first had to guess which direction it was coming from.  Last one to NOT run wins.  A lot of times I had to jump for the river.
I used to play a lot along rail road tracks, setting things up to be run over.  coins of course, but other things too.  Pretty cool to have a nickle that's been flattened by a train.

Hornet nest knocking
We would drive around looking for hornet nests.  When found, throw rocks at it.  First to knock it good won.  One time I remember was in an apple orchard.  Me and my brother.  We had our dog with us.  (see where this is going?)  Well, we knocked down that nest but those hornets homed in on us and we ran back to the car.  The dog, however, wasn't as attentive and didn't get in the car.  The hornets started hitting the windshield and windows as we were trying to attract them.  In doing so, we also attracted the dog.  Hornets saw the dog and lit in on him.  You have NO idea the howl a dog can make in a hornet attack, trying to get in the car and we won't let him.  Doggy finally ran for the river.  The one with the train bridge.

There's more.  Like ice testing.  This was done on stock ponds and involved first walking out on a pond.  Next guy had to go further.  If the pond held the weight all the way, you had to make a fire out of sticks on the pond.  Then each person had to feed the fire with more sticks.  Eventually someone fell in due to the thinning ice of the fire and weight of the sticks, or the fire melted through and fell in on itself.  We once had ice so thick, the fire never melted though.  A big bonfire!!

According to the experts we all died as kids. No way could we have lived riding in the back of a pickup truck, let alone sitting on the side of the bed. Riding bikes and skateboards without helmets. Playing outside in th street until dark without parents around.

Bumper skiing. Hold on to the bumper of a passing car in the snow; see who makes it the farthest.

Pulling sleds from a car.

Lawndart chicken: Throw is straight up. The person that moves loses.
