My gf's boy has been with me this whole weekend. Never had a father figure, so, it is up to me to get him in gear. Weed eating....worthless. Dishes....worthless.  Cleaning gutters... worthless. Anything requiring a six second attention span or more....worthless.
But I aint giving up.  :smt006

Get him hooked on fishing and then tell him a few of those tasks need to be done before you can take him.

Stick with him as a good father figure can change the kids life.

Exactly! He is going on his first duck hunt tomorrow,  kayakjack is on his way too. Diver duck smack down at Mildred Island. Anyone else want to join, chime in.
He is a great kid, really is. But he has no skills I would like to think a 12 year old should have. It is VERY apparent to me through him, the importance of a man in the development of boys.
I just hope he doesnt pick up any of my bad habits, or jokes!  :smt044

Keep in mind some guys have no skills at 24, 34 or 64. It isn't always upbringing.  :smt010

He is the right age to teach. Use love and patience. He obviously has some level of ADHD or just plain squirrels in the head. So much energy... Good on you to take it on! every Man (in training) needs male examples in their life. Bring him out so we can all get to know him and he can gather more examples outside of "Mom's boyfriend".... he reminds me way to much of ME at that age...
my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

Lol, that funny. He is a good kid, and you're right Ron, I need to get him exposure to the group and other men. Shake hands with BigJim!
I shouldnt say useless because you guys are right, lots of adults are useless themselves! What I should say, is he has not been given many opportunities and his skills reflect it.
I find myself comparing him to Cody, and that isnt fair. Cody has skills above and beyond most adults in many ways, and a total retard in others lol.
Ronny did pluck his first duck I gave him to do, VERY well. He has the desire to learn, and I can work with that. Im excited to put him in a kayak this spring. Cody is going to have to teach him how to fish out of it, but none the less I am stoked and he is always asking about kayaking.
We'll make a man out of him yet. :smt006

P.S. Planning ahead for New Year's Eve next year, come on over and at midnight, we can watch his balls drop.

With all respect and kindness, "useless" was in your tag line, but "worthless" was in your story.  I am stoked that you have found some use for him in his talents, while investing "worth and value" into a young man is something that is a step up and difficult.  I have sons and daughters and I struggle with this encouraging style myself.  For me all kids can be made useful for my needs, but how do I more consistently train them for skills for their own future, while ultra encouraging their person.  Kind of a twofer.  I get a little authoritative when teaching a skill while running over their person, mood, or lack of skill, and it comes out in my voice and probably does not encourage, but adds an unhealthy fear and not a desire to learn from me.  May I be instructive and kind while instructing(not that you aren't MBV, I don't know your teaching style) and may my kids be hungry for learning from me as a dad because I make learning fun, safe, humorous, and appropriately encouraging according to which kid I'm working with.  Sorry for the hijack sermon, must be Sunday. :smt006

He did good today. I had to bail on everyone on the diver hunt, hurtin too bad, and us eless, couldnt get his ass up at first, sec, or third call. SO, we took a drive around the delta, checked in on the mighty hunters, then went to Oakgrove park to catch a trout. He's useless. But we had fun! He did get casting down, so I gotta give him that... :smt004
