I broke up with Suburban about 10 years ago over the same thing.
I got quoted a substantially lower price by a local supplier and have been with them since 2005. I think we're paying about $2/gallon.
We have a cooperative in my area that I may go with next year as they are charging about $0.20 less per gallon. The downside is that they don't offer additional services like my local guys do (inspections, reduced $ for repair/installations, etc)

I'm currently getting propane from Mountain Propane Services in Felton.
full disclosure, they were in the news last year 'cause the owner had a huge un permitted propane tank at his residence and nearly blew up his neighbor's house when propane from a faulty valve (on one of their delivery trucks) ran down to the neighbor's hot water heater.
BUT, they set up my propane dryer, and service our furnace, and are always out ahead of any weather to be sure we have a full tank.
I've been on the fence about switching to Ferrell gas, since they have a bunch of customers in the Doon area.

I have been looking into propane co-ops where I live, ran across this group in South SF Bay, even if you don't live in their boundary you can be a non-voting member. Might be worth the $20 membership fee if they let you take advantage of the benefits. Looks like they have agreements with a few suppliers plus post the price/gallon.

The Suburban guy mentioned SPUG, but that's still $3.80 for Suburban customers. I was thinking of Kamps as I think some neighbors have them. Gotta talk to the neighbors first...

We have kamps and have had zero issues. Granted we are in a way different area. We get .05 discount for using there tank monitor .05 for my wife being a state employee and another.05 for being on there auto fill program. They monitor and fill when we get below 30%.

That's pretty funny, and can't be good for business... I think several people around here use them too, so it might be an option. Right now, it looks like either Mountain or Kamps...

When I lived on 35 up by Castle Rock State park we joined the South Skyline Propane Users Group and got a really good deal on our propane.  You might check into that

My last straw with Amerigas was a real doozy.
I negotiated a set price for a year somewhere in the high $3 range. This after having some over inflated billing issues.
The first fill up was right on the mark we agreed to. The next was way high.
I went in to talk with them and the same damn woman that I set the deal up with looked me in the eye and said that they had no such program, and had no idea who would authorize such a thing. I blew a gasket.
She ended up recalculating the bill to the terms we had previously set. I wrote her a check, then walked across the street to the company a am currently with. I think they saw me coming because they were kinda laughing when I walked in still prett pissed off. Said they were getting people with the same stories all the time.
The new company came and pulled Amerigas' tank, siphoned the gas out of it, set there own brand new tank and refilled all by noon the next day. That was probably 3 years ago. Couldn't be happier.

Oh, and make sure you aren't paying sales tax on the propane if it's your primary residence.
Learned that one the hard way too. :smt013

I 've used about 4 companies here.. all are using the same tactics now.  They charge a one time fee to "inspect"your gas lines before they will take you on as a customer.  The fee is around 100 dollars... plus tank rental.  It get's expensive switching.      If you're a low consumption ,,, get yourself a couple 10 gallon tanks and self serve.

We have Amerigas,  I think the last bill we got (Last year) was $3.45/gal?  (Wife is CFO so she know for sure) She negotiates with them every time she calls when our tank gets low. Our tank is a tiny 285 gal one and it for our primary residence use.  Are they not supposed to charge sales tax on the propane?  Can't say our last bill did, but I'ma gonna check it!

There is a tax exemption for residences but usually they want you to fill out something saying it's a residence they are filling at.

I would, but we're planning to switch the hot water to propane.
