I wouldn't hang a mesh bag over the side...thats basically a sea anchor and will be tough paddling.  I use a bucket, I can dump some water in periodically and seems to keep the crab alive.  I've used a mesh bag before but found it harder to swap out some barely legals for jumbos...

When crabbing at least half the time you are idle during your soak. This is when the bag gets hung overboard. When it's time to paddle towards your traps is when you bring the crabs on deck so that there is no drag. Works just fine and plus one on the illegal upgrading of crabs.

And like I said before it works great as a counterbalance when pulling up heavy traps.

 Live well works great...     I'll run a pump for a few minutes, then open the drain.

Burlap sack in rear tankwell.  Same for fish.  Dunk the sack in the water after adding crab.   Wet burlap keeps em cool and alive well after I get home and gear cleaned.

  I think that's  called water-boarding. 

I have 2 stacked milk crates in the back. Crabs in the bottom crate (lined with burlap), gear in the top crate. I've found that the crabs stay alive without any issue for a whole day without water as long as they are kept out of wind and sunlight.

Thats a great idea! I like the counterbalance. I'll think of doing that when pulling up my pot next time!!

As long as you aerate the water the crabs will be happy for a long ride back to a boiling pot. I use a 5 gallon bucket with a cutout in the lid for the hose, works good if you have a long way to go. Before we started using the aerator crabs would be sluggish after an hour ride, after using it they were very lively after the ride.
