Work and wife and young daughters prevent me from doing a lot of overnight/camping trips, but luckily I live pretty much right in the middle of the Monterey Bay area, and so can do day trips to areas where I can harvest a wide variety of yummy fish.

Here is a quick vid of some of my favorite examples of fish taken on day trips from my house here in Watsonville over the past 3 years.

Feel very fortunate to be able to target these fish and still be able to make it home at night for dinner with my family.  :smt001

Fish shown in the vid include:

25 inch Cabezon: http://doty.norcalkayakanglers.com/catches/1875
Verms up to 21 inches: http://doty.norcalkayakanglers.com/catches/2136
Lings up to 37 inches: http://doty.norcalkayakanglers.com/catches/1394
Sheephead up to 29.75 inches: http://doty.norcalkayakanglers.com/catches/1986
Halibut up to 41.25 inches and 31 pounds: http://doty.norcalkayakanglers.com/catches/1168
Striped Bass up to 43 inches and 31 pounds: http://doty.norcalkayakanglers.com/catches/2310

Super-dang.........life is good.  I'm catchin' the gratitude.  To harvest and be home by dinner with solid catches is priceless. :smt006

Fatties!  Hope the knee gets better in time for the few flat days we will have this year.  Don't despair, your knee will return to 100%.   :smt006

Thanks buddy!! I hope so too...going on 3 weeks of pain and immobility now...seeing orthopedic specialist on 11/21.

Trying to stay positive and hopeful...

Cursing myself for taking zero abs and not shooting a greenling earlier this year...will most likely be my worst DOTY showing in 5 years...

thanks for sharing, Jim. And my best wishes for a swift recovery.

Im probably late to this party, but why do you extract the otoliths adn what do you learn from them? Are you aging fish?

I just like taking the stones out to keep for souvenirs/trophies.

Thanks for sharing Jim.  We need more posts like this during Winter time.
