BEWARE!!!!!
Dear Friends,
I wanted to make all of you aware that there are " people" trolling Craigslist customers who are trying to sell an item. I recently posted an item that I wanted to sell on Craigslist and immediately got a text from someone (a woman)? the next morning saying that she was very interested in the Onyx bathroom vanity top that I was selling and informed me that she was busy and her husband was going to send me a cashier’s check for $50 over the advertised price. Her instructions were to cash the check ASAP and inform her that I had received the funds. Needless to say, I was elated, but something didn’t feel right.
Anyway, I never got the check, but today I received a cashier’s check for $1800+, looked completely legit, but it just didn't make sense why a Physician's Organization in Illinois would be sending me all this money.
To make a long story short, we tracked down the organization on Google and my wife Janice called them today. To our surprise someone answered and a woman told us that they have been getting a lot of phone calls like this. it seems that there are people trolling Craigslist sellers and sending them what looks like legit cashier checks. As soon as you cash the check, they have found a way to raid your bank account. This woman told us that their organization had nothing to do with the cashier check that I received and that for some reason the common denominator of all the callers was being a Craigslist seller.
Wow!!!Isn't that kind of freaky and scary!!!
Tonight I got an email form this supposedly woman telling me that her husband will be sending me a cashier’s check for $325 that I will receive via Priority Mail on Monday and that I should cash it and use the extra money to pay somebody else!!!!!
It's amazing what kind of scams people are doing these days!!!
If YOU ARE A CRAIGSLIST SELLER BEWARE of cashier's checks that look very real and by all means do not cash it if you do not know who the sender is!!!
Your BANK ACCOUNT could be raided!!!!
Felt a moral obligation to share this info with you.
Best,
Michael S. Yamagata

If they send it to you through the mail, take it to your local post office. Ask to speak with a supervisor or Postmaster and explain the situation. Give them whatever it came in and the contents. They can then forward it to the Postal Inspectors.
It wouldn't hurt to make copies of what they sent either for your own records.
There are so many CL scams from fake sellers and fake buyers.

Wow, I did not know they could raid your bank account. We've been receiving a few checks that look like lawsuit checks. I kind of question about it, cuz I had nothing to do with that company. Makes you wonder.

I have experienced this many of times. I only deal with people locally. If they cant come and pick it up with cash in hand. No deal !

One time I was bored and just began emailing this person that had responded to my ad . Which I had a feeling was a scam .I asked for him to send a copy of drivers license and birth certificate . We bantered back and forth about 6 emails. Finally I told him I would contact the police and have him arrested. He came back with a insult. So we insulted each other for like another 6 emails. That was fun. Then no more emails.

Seriously though. I am sure there are plenty of people that fall for this.

I had the same thing happen when trying to sell an entertainment center, sounded phony right from the start. I gave the information to the internet fraud division and never responded back to the person.

Theses have been going on since Craigslist and eBay were started.

Tote is correct and good advice about turning over to postal inspectors.  Many times they are targeting large areas and when they can link to other cases they can put more resources on it.

Another issue to be aware of is someone saying they want an item but after you give them your address they said something came up or can't make the purchase.  Now they have your address.  Then someone else will ask you to meet elsewhere and they will burglarize your house while you are out.

Always a good idea to meet in public place or in police depts parking lot for these kind of sales.  Some depts offer adjoining stalls just for these type of transactions.

When it comes to craigslist, it's either in person and cash deal, or it's PayPal.  I see zero reason to even consider any sort of check, especially a cashier check.

I've sold stuff on craigslist I had to mail and took PayPal.  Works great.

When meeting someone for a deal, I never meet at my home.  We meet at a Starbucks in a shopping mall.  Plenty of people and I carry. (CCW legal)  I won't even have a garage sale at my home.  Too many people use it as a ruse to case your home.  Yesterday my neighbor had a garage sale.  He had some stereo gear he was selling and a Beatles album was on the turntable.  Someone stole the album!  The jacket was still in the garage, they took just the vinyl record.

Trust NO ONE.

I've done a lot of CL deals.  Cash only, in person, public place.  Ive had only one instance so far that the buyer tried to pass a fake $100.  Always carry a counterfeit detector pen.  May not be perfect, but it helps.

I'm going through this now with my motorcycle sale.  I've had 2 scam attempts already. They go away after I tell them it's either a face-to-face or PayPal transaction.

A Police Station parking lot is a pretty good place to transact Craigslist sales and purchases.

Be careful on Paypal.

I posted a Lincoln Navigator a few weeks ago, I received a text from Utah, this guy sounds legit and good for it, he ask if I have a PayPal. I said no (though I just recently set up one) He says I should set up one and will send payment (mind you Full asking price) I said how do I get the car to UTAH? He said he will take care of arranging movers to transport the car... Oh OK, He even said it will only take me 2 minutes to set and money in my account in no time. It was so tempting...But if you know paypal refund policy even advertised, buyers can says shit about anything purchased and get full refund no questions ask.
Live today for tomorrow's sake.
We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.

Did it not make you wonder how someone would be willing to pay full price no questions asked if they never seen or drove the vehicle ?  :smt002
