Why not just have a PERMANENT 5" RING " in there.  My thinking is that when multiple numbers of crabs get in the trap, a majority of them will stay put.  Also gives you another 5" entry point for them to come in.
this gives me a great idea.  perhaps a 5" (or maybe 6") ring or even a square rectangle wire opening.  perminantly attached, with the single strand of cotton running across the ring.  large crabs wont be able to escape until the strand has been broken....  just a  thought.  i might have to try this, lmk if you guys think that wont legal.

With a promar  collapsable trap isn't it easier to just easier to eliminate the clips that hold the two halves together at the top and sew them together with rotten cotton ?

I feel that it's alot easier to close the metal clips while on the water compared to wrapping rotten cotton otw

For a stainless steel ring. Go buy some large s/s welding rod bend it to the size you want and then braze it with a ss brazing kit from Orchard supply. I use it for all my ss welding.

Is the Rotten Cotton still a requirement if you have a permanent 5" opening?

You might want to hold off using 5" and especially 6" pvc until you do some tests. I think most crabs can get out of those openings. Might as well use hoop nets at that point.

not if they're blocked using rotton cotton.

im going to replace my rings, that i think are too small to comply with regs.

You still need unobstructed escape rings. I recommend you try this method
instead.  :smt003
