Leashes are a pain in the ass. I dumped last Oct off Trinidad and lost a rod and reel, Fish Finder, net and other goodies. If you leash everything it's like a spiderweb even when you're upright! I use plumbing insulating noodles which are smaller diameter than standard pool noodles and attach them with cable ties. I have tested them and they float well. My net also has the floatation attached. Still too many leashes on board with fish clip, lip grips, paddle, etc!

+1 for plumbing insulation

I made the mistake of leashing my paddle and rods.  Even worse I had tethered everything up before launching.  I had just launched when a wave took my kayak sideways, I jumped out but the force was strong enough to pull my kayak away from me yanking a still held leashed paddle breaking my hand and having to untangle myself from my leashed rods.   :smt009

I use pool noodles now and don't leash my paddle until I'm safely on the water.  I like the plumbing insulation idea.

I have pool noodles on all my rods and net. I have a leash on my paddle. I also have rod leashes, but the only time I leash my rod to the rod holder is when I am trolling. Those threshers hit hard! Damn near yanked the rod out of my rod holder.

For surf launches and landings, EVERYTHING gets stowed away. All the rods go inside the rod pod, the rod holders are folded down flush against the hull, the fish finder is also folded down inside the sonar pod, and covered, the net lays down flat under the rear well bungies, and I remove the leash from my paddle. Basically, I can jump out in the shallows with my paddle and have my kayak get washed up on the beach upside down and still have all my gear protected.

Great advices.
I will get some plumbing insulations but does it actually work? I will have to float test.
Thanks

I think it floats better than the pool noodles do and it doesn't get in the way of the line on my rods as much either.

Kirk we tried. It's a never ending battle  :smt044

The good thing about it is that Tim will store your rods for you when you launch with him.  :smt044

Leashing rods is not a good idea and completely unnecessary.
No need to have a pool noodle on your rod at all times either, unless you fish 2 rods at a time.
I only fish 1 at a time and 90% of the time it's in my hand. If I drop it then bad on me, even if I flip.
Removable flotation is the way to go.
If your rods are in the rod holder and you flip, as the kayak rolls the side pressure from the water on the rods locks them in place. As the kayak goes upside down the flotation keeps the rods floating upwards keeping them in the rod holders. Even if they fall out they will be on the surface for easy recovery.
As you right the kayak the force of the water on the rods keeps them in the rod holders and you don't have to worry about becoming trapped in a tangled mess (ask Montana, BTDT).
Below is a video of what I use on my rods when I am not actively using them. I've never donated a rod or reel to the big blue and I've been over a couple of times.

It works well. I have both my rods with the insulation on them, from the grip up to the first eyelet. I use Penn Squalls and Ugly Stick Tiger rods and it floats great!

Great video. Thank you. I may go with pipe insulation. I guess 1/2 or 1 inch should fit most rods.
