Hooked up with bruddah Freddie this morning so he could try his hand at yak drifting.  We did my usual drift, and hit a few smolts in the upper half.  We anchored up near one of my favorite banks...

After pounding the run for a bit I felt the tug.  I swung, the rod loaded and the drag sang.  I could tell this was a small fish, but it was a little hothead.  After a nice battle on my new Loomis light weight noodle I got it near the boat.  As I went for the net it's tail and adipose broke the surface and it was obvious this little nut was wild...and chrome.  I slid it carefully into my into my non-C&R net.  This is the brightest fish I have seen in Ukiah, this thing must have been on a mission...

Freedie popped his anchor and took this pic of the lil' cutey before sending him on his way.

WE tried on more hole on the way down and Freddie felt the love, but came unbuttoned...the curse of tiny barbless hooks, and what makes this soooo addictive!

Sean:

I am so jealous.  I'm afraid this will be  a non-steelie winter for me, just couldn't get out there.

I'll treasure the one day with you and Jelly and Andy.  I learned a lot toward my next steelhead, for sure.

thanks and good on ya, bud!

Sean-

Bruddah... Thanks so much for showing me how it's done in your neck of the woods. That stretch of the river looked totally fishy all over. I had a total blast today. The drive pretty much sucked but the drift was great. I BELIEVE!!! I've heard of people catching steelies and even seen some pix... but, I haven't witnessed it until today. I'm on a mission now... I want a steelie... I need a steelie. Hopefully, I'll get another chance to hook up with you before the run is over. I got teased a little today... to bad it didn't stick. All that means is that I'll be back. Still can't get over how bright that fish was. That fish you caught was straight from the ocean man. Great color to him.

Tote-

That drift anchor worked like a charm. Thanks for putting that together for me. I ended up buying a river anchor from West Marine... the mushroom type. It worked pretty good. Sean made the comment that it sounded like a pirate ship dropping anchor because it was so noisy. I'll have to grease the pulley or something. Otherwise, it was right on the money. There's a little bit of a trick to dropping your anchor on the river though. I was all over the place. Dropping to late, crossing Sean's anchor line, smashing into his yak, getting driven into the bushes... I was all over the place. I'll get the hang of it though. I've heard that there have been a few fish being pulled out of the AR... I'm thinking about giving it a try next week either before work or after. I'll give you a call... maybe we can hook up or something.

Freddie

Did the anchor clear the water when it was up or did it drag in the water?
Call me. If I can swing a day to get off early we can hit it and do a drift from point A to point B instead of going from point A, then paddle back to point A, then paddle back to point A.........You know what I mean. :smt005
