Your wife should have been drinking more during her pregnancy :) When I told my wife about your "baby Huey", her jaw dropped. Maybe there is something to be said for hybrid vigor?

As for downriggers, the powerboat guys tend to recommend running the ball deeper than the flasher/lure, and they run the lure/flasher well back of the release as well. 15-20 feet is not uncommon. Why? I think because they can. Maybe it is marginally more effective? So over hours and hours of fishing, it's going to mean more in the boat?

Regards,
Scott

Paul,

My little "hybrid" (actually 1/4 bred) is 15 mo and not quite 25 lbs.  I just looked at the growth charts...  25 lbs is the 95th percentile for an 11 month old.  Is baby "Huey" very tall for his age?

Scott,

I hadn't thought about the cannonball causing problems.   I mean, when we fish with a release the weight is inline with the lure already.  I suppose you could put a three-way swivel in the spectra up a few feet from the cannonball on the downrigger.  You'd be above the ball and still not have to worry about the clip slipping.

If you have the room or a scotty mount, the triple rod holder is spaced about right to put lead in the water on one side and set you holder on the other.  Here is a pic of mine.  The open deck enthusiasts won't dig it, but it works good for lakes.  May have to rework it for the ocean or large species.......

I use a Scotty extension tube with a home-made PVC Scotty mount arm to provide a slightly more compact setup compared to the Scotty triple. It works well for me with infinite adjustability.

For those of you who are knowledgeable about downriggers.

I just bought a Scotty S1073 downrigger to mount on my yak and the clip that came with it seems to have a really light release tension and it isn't adjustable.  It just seems too light for Salmon but I haven't tested it on the water yet.

Should I chuck it and buy one that is adjustable before Salmon season?

My downrigger came with this snap.. the 1181 18" mini-powergrip.

The little black plastic bit that connects the wire to the main black platic part of the grip is a tension adjuster.  Push it forward and back to adjust the tension.

Use the mini for trout. Buy a Salmon sized unit for Salmon. Your release clip is what sets the hook. Want to set the hook on a King the same way you set it on a 12" rainbow?

All through her pregnancy I tried to get my wife to drink a little red wine Only succeeded a couple of times

His marks on the growth charts go straight up  and the doc usually says something comical during the visit     I was only half joking about tips to stunt a baby's growth but I have a hunch he'll slow down sometime soon    He's 26 or 27 inches, wouldn't hold still for the tape measure

I know the smart pb guys will run a rod every 15 ft or so to cover the depths

A lot of what pb guys do reflects their consumption of antiseasick medicines that come in bottle or can     I don't actually get seasick but this year mine is going to be in 500ml bottles 10 year cave aged

Great Bass 2 that's a pretty clever rig If I made it it'd fall apart before I got up to trolling speed or pop out and the hull would fill up with water while I was taking a shot of seasick medicine

Hey, how are you guys getting pictures on here? I'm a technoretard

Blue, I do have a rudder, but I still don't like the idea of becoming a hunchback from paddlng with the rod out to the side.

my rod was straight back last hear with a mirror on my sunglasses.

easy paddling, I did miss the one hookup I got, but I was talking to a guy in a PB and he was kind enough to tell
me I had a fish on.

So I figure between polite PBers and my mirror I will notice the strike. I hope.

I also did a bit of trooching with the rod almost straight forward. got a hit that way, but no hookup.

so that's my plan. 10' rod straight back with a mirror on my sunglasses (okay, looks a little funny).
release. bait.

I'm done.

hope I catch a fish before rockfish opens!

Brian,
Yeah, that's the one I have too and son-of-a-gun the little black thing does adjust a little.  It might have helped if I had read the instructions.  It still seems a bit wimpy so I'll look for a heavier one as Scott suggested.  Thanks for the picture and the help.

Good to see that I'm not the only one "training" their infant about holding on to fishing rods. Are you setting Max in the kayak yet? Having him hold the paddle? I'm sure all this will count for something in 2-3 years :)

Now that we're off track talking about fishing babies... here I am with my son Owen about a year ago when he was 3 1/2 months old working on some of the basics.

and here he is again this past month looking from shore crabs (a.k.a. bait hunting) as my wife does some marine biology field work in the background.

I can't wait to take him fishing someday.

He gets pretty worked up when I take it away from him   If Mama sees me putting him in the yak I'll definitely be living under a bridge   It's going to require some serious stealth to put this one past the heffe

He is going to start swim lessons pretty soon    he had a cold or I would've started him at 6 weeks

The convergence is nice and light When a 4 mo can whip it around you know it's good

Yesterday I was up in the city and got another one    Jonah said he has more in stock if anyone's interested
