Hey Dann.  I'm another Midwest transplant.  Grew up fishing along the SD/MN area.  Walleye, northern, and perch baby!  Ice fishing too!

You'll find out there's a lot of kayaks out there that will do lakes/rivers and Ocean.  You should be able to find some decent used yaks to fit ur bill.

I use an xfactor and it works great on all 3 water types.

Looking forward to seeing some of ur reports! :smt006

I've been searching Craigslist. I've found a few that I am going to check out. Reading user reviews, and setups.

I think I'm going to go with a trailer instead of a roof rack. I just don't trust the factory roof rack Mazda uses. PLus it's a CX-5 and I don't want to be lifting a kayak above my head a lot.

I found this trailer @ Harbor Freight I think I can build out pretty nice.

Dann,

That trailer looks like a pretty good idea. You could probably tow it with a Prius or Mini Cooper. The 1,100+ lb rating will be enough for starters, but unless you find a 12-step program for kayak fishing, you're gonna out grow that thing in a couple years. Meanwhile, welcome to the left coast madness!

Dan,

Okay what size trailer should I be looking into? I ask because I don't usually do 12 steps and nothing small.

Thanks,

Dann

There are quite a few harbor freight diy kayak trailer vids on Youtube.  Didn't know which one to pick.  If you carry more than 1100 lbs, I think you might need help.  I think the harbor freight trailer is the way to go.  I think he's joking about the 1100 lbs....if not Sir Duckguy, correct me :smt006

Thanks Eddie.

I did get the trailer after talking to a few others. I am using a few of the youtube videos to build it out. I have a storage unit I can keep my kayak and the fold up trailer in.

I am looking for a used starter kayak on craigslist:
http://sfbay.craigslist.org/nby/bod/5724602377.html
http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/boa/5724966699.html
http://sfbay.craigslist.org/nby/bod/5724513897.html (although I'm not sure my dog will ride on these very well, plus I am not sure how far Petaluma is from Sunnyvale).

or will go with this one from Bass Pro
http://www.basspro.com/Ascend-FS12T-SitonTop-Kayak-Desert-Storm/product/1512140822

I did try out a couple of kayaks on Saturday, but ended up with food poison on sunday so I didn't get a chance to try more out. I felt better in the sit on than the sit in or inflatables.

A little bit of an update:

I started this little adventure in August thinking this would be a good stop gap to fill in until I decided if I wanted to buy a PB. I purchased a used Tarpon 120 from Cptsloppywood and thought that would be all I really needed to buy. So here it is October and I'm in a few thousand with 2 kayaks, a trailer, safety gear and new fishing gear. I tried the Handline tournament and that was it I was hooked on kayak fishing. Then the simply tournament was an absolute blast even though I got seasick for the first time in my life (my dog did better than I did). Fahrenheit840 and I went out at SWS where I caught my first Ling and Vermillion. Again I got seasick, but I purchased some patches and hope that will help. Last weekend when it was raining I was a little disappointed I wasn't out fishing.

I want to thank everyone that has made me feel welcome to NCKA. A lot of people have went out of their way to make me and my dog Harry feel welcome. Living in the South Bay that isn't always the case as most of the people around here are pretty stuck up.

I can't wait to hit the tournaments next season and meet up with a lot more of you.

JUst one quick question I could not find the answer to on the search function. WTF did you guys get me into? This thing is more addicting than crack. Can I expect an intervention at some point? A 12 step program?
