Thats the thing, and unfortunately, its primarily a CA thing.  Other states allow the harvest of "road kill".  We choose to live in CA, and no matter how bad the laws are, we have to follow them.  Im not in any way endorsing the crap we have to endure.

And i agree, never, ever, swerve.  Hit the animal straight on.  Much less chance of injury to yourself and others property that way.  A deer will bounce up and over....a tree wont.

Anyone interested in  wearing a red speedo and kneeling next to roadkill deer and eating a beef liver or red jello? Ohh ya we can pour a gallon of ketchup all over you too. I think multiple cameras for filming will be required. If anyone stops by the side of the road you have to tell them your just having breakfast as you bite into the liver. If we determine that cutting open the deer is not a violation we can do that too. If that video works out we can then  make a mechanical deer ( head turning and front feet moving as to get up) that will look like it is trying to get away as you are eating its liver.
That's only slightly less gory than my story, pocket knife, live animal with broken spine, doing the dispatch in the middle of the road...  did you know that a deer's carotid artery is deep in muscle and hard to find ?  I do

On the neck, grab the wind pipe, stab behind it, pull knife through. Cut carotid, and wind pipe. Easy peasy.

Last I talked to anybody from DFG about it, and yeah it was DFG then, they said to call it in and they or someone would pick up the roadkill for feeding to predators at zoos. I know Folsom Zoo gets a lot of mountain lion, wolf and coyote food that way.
Warning! Retiree; Knows it all and has plenty of time to tell you about it.

Last year right after deer season I saw a solid 4x4 hit on 280S and was honestly tempted to run back home and grab the hacksaw.

I'd really like to see people's faces when I'm caught in a suit on the side of the road covered in blood on during the AM commute.....

On the way to work today  a 8 mile  journey another Buck this one a spike got the vehicular kill. 4 weeks ago  same road one of the bigger bucks  I have seen in California rack wise got the vehicular kill. That one was in velvet still not fully grown out but huge. They started to grade  to  build a subdivision on his stomping grounds and drove him onto the road.  Last year I saw  this buck with his identical twin brother on the land that is being graded in September and I have to say the rack was impressive  at least a 38DD.

Oh I'm sure they're great. Especially when you have that one stubborn leg that just won't get in the trunk when a line of 50 cars is flying by on the one road in and out of town...

What about rules on dispatching a horribly wounded deer on the road?

I'm guessing there's no exception to discharging a firearm on or right next to a roadway, but is there a chance someone might try to hit you with other charges like poaching?

Month or so ago I saw a deer trying to crawl away with broken legs while a motorhome that hit I was parked a little ways away. I pulled over around the turn, planning to carefully try to drag it off the side of the road into the brush to put it out of its misery. Buuuut before I could I round the turn and this moron is unloading into its head in the middle of the road with traffic stopped.

When you say unloading do you mean firearms?

When I was in High School I used to go to Paynes Creek deer hunting with my brother all the time. One time I did not go with him someone had hit a doe it had broken legs and was suffering in the road. Not wanting the deer to suffer and  not having anything but a tire iron he hit it in the head with the tire iron to kill it. He happened to be wearing a white Tshirt an when he hit it it splashed blood and brain matter all over him. He goes to the local burger place in  Woodland after this covered in blood and either someone called the police or one was in the parking lot and noticed the blood. My brother was holding a large chocolate shake when the CHP motorcycle cop said you come here and pointed at him. He then proceeded to trip on the cement parking border curb and spill a whole large chocolate shake down the CHPs boot. Needless to say he was not pleased. He held my brother for  an hour or so till he figured out it was deer blood and finally let him go.

Montana is one of the states where you can take home roadkilled animals and eat them.  See http://fwp.mt.gov/hunting/licenses/all/salvagePermit/default.html .  In December of 2014 I got two roadkilled elk while heading out on a fishing trip.  See http://www.northwestkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=14677.0 .  A couple months ago I got a nice roadkilled buck.  See http://www.northwestkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=17673.0 .  I’ve had several friends obtain one or more roadkilled deer.

I was real lucky in that the roadkilled critters I found had very little damage, and I didn’t need to discard very much of their meat.  But some roadkilled animals are seriously smashed up and essentially unusable, even if they don’t appear to have too much damage before they are skinned.

It would be seriously stupid to intentionally hit a deer with a standard vehicle in an effort to get some roadkilled meat, because even a low-speed collision with a deer can do thousands of dollars of damage to a vehicle.  I suppose you could protect a vehicle with a massive bumper, but even with such protection a collision might bend the vehicle’s body.

In El Dorado Hills they should rename Green Valley road  to deerkill road. I wonder if those little monuments on the side of the road are for people  killed by deer or for the deer killed by cars. For those of you caring my new nonprofit "Deer Lives Matter & their really tasty too" will be accepting donations beginning next year.
