* remember for those in participating in AOTY.....

1. 1. All fish entered must be caught by hook and line (i.e. hooked, fought, and landed) from a kayak " without aid from anyone else" and using methods deemed legal by the California Department of Fish and Game. Sails will be allowed in the Sail division but no motors may be used or attached to the kayak while fishing.

Good point.
I don't like stuff that sucks.

You can borrow a net from your buddy to land fish as far as AOTY is concerned. Your buddy can NOT net the fish though.

Not to be too anal about it, but that's assuming borrowing a net is "deemed legal by the California Department of Fish and Game". At the least, I think that is debatable.

Thanks guys.  Found a brand new promar collapsible net at a garage sale this weekend for $10, problem solved.  It fits in the forward hatch where it will stay until I'm requested by DFW to produce.

Will it be available for "immediate" use when stored in the forward hatch?

To each his own. I'd want to hear the DFG's point of view. They took the trouble to say immediate rather than say it simply must be available. If they're good with it you're golden. If they care, I'd hate to go through the trouble and find I was still breaking the regs.

Since gaffing is core to this thread I'll ask:  Can one use a kage (Hawaiian kill spear) for the gaff?

Not according to Carrie Wilson's DFW Q&A column, with the exception of Pacific halibut.

Is there any logic behind this reg? If you're going to gaff a fish what difference could it possibly make whether it's curved or straight?
