looks like all the manufacturers are stepping up their game.  i was wondering how hobie would do the reverse, seems like a smart way to do it, also with some sort of spring loading mechanism.

Can't wait to see more on this mirage drive! If they make it reverse compatible to all the other mirage boats I feel it'll be a slam dunk!

Just took a look at the reversible Mirage Drive on Kayak Angler Facebook. Like the idea but.... 7.9 pound claimed weight means less meat in perhaps critical areas. Hobie will tell you they have engineered it all out. Remember when crank arms were changed from solid to hollow. Multiple breakage reports. Would not rush to buy one. There will be user reviews of real time/place tough usage. We'll see.

Yeah I don't know why they would care to make it lighter by a pound or two, its not like the mirage drive was heavy before. maybe to keep the cost more manageable?

Bigger and lighter sounds like a bad combo.

i like the idea as well, but think the push/pull style pedaling (keep doing same as going forward) and trying to go in reverse will be at least somewhat counter intuitive to people mentally.  it will take a while for folks to learn how to handle it.

we're in a new world people!  this is definitely the most exciting year we've ever had in kayak development.

A 7.9 pound drive in a 100 pound plus  plastic yak does not make reasonable design sense to me. If I'm offshore I want overbuilt strength. I also think that the best reverse option, if you really need reverse, is a full rotation crank system. No levers, just a quick leg/foot direction of motion change. Like I said, we'll see what shakes out. I'd be happy to test one for Hobie though and give a  report after several months of hard usage.
