So I was just informed of a kayak launch in the northern area of the city of Napa. It is on Trancas St. behind the Chevron gas station. So my questions are what can be caught this far up north on the river (where I'm assuming it's more freshwater than brackish, correct me if I'm wrong) and if anybody has some tips on lures and bait too. I'm very new to kayak fishing and would love to have more spots to fish at close by.

I think it's closed or very restricted above Trancas street. Fresh water regs apply above Trancas, ocean regs below.  Sweenys in Napa should have decent Intel.

The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope.  ~John Buchan

The spot that you're talking about is Trancas Crossing Park. If you follow the paved path down the hill and take a right after the footbridge, you'll see a little dirt trail taking off through the trees towards the river. The trail leads to a little sandy landing and a muddy beach(at low tide) which is where you can launch.

Heading upstream, the water transitions from brackish to fresh and you'll encounter a few spots that you'll have to get out and port through shallow riffles or over gravel bars. Expect to see lots of carp and pike minnows, and some bass, bluegill, and trout scattered around. It's a fun area to explore, especially with a friend to help with the portages.

See attached for the regs. Have fun !
