Dumbarton Sunday 2/25 - No love :-(

No love all around for JTF, Freddie, and I at the Dumbarton yesterday.  No dinos, not even a shark or kingfish.  None of the boaters that joined us caught anything either.

It started pouring cold rain and blowing hard while we were out there.  That lasted awhile and we stuck it out from 7:30 to noon hoping it would be worth it in the end.

We decide to paddle back about 2 hrs before low tide, but we still had to trudge through over a hundred yards of mud.

Despite all that... I still had fun... and it always is when it becomes an adventure!

I think these storms put the fish off the bite.  We need a nice stable high pressure system to get the fish back on the bite.  

My own experience tells me that the day before these storms come through tend to put the fish on the feed moreso than during the stormy periods.  Seems to have held true this weekend.  At black point we marked LOTS of fish, but most were cruising mid water column.  A few HUGE marks that could only be one thing.  But they seemed to have lockjaw.

By bet is that once these storms pass, San Pablo Bay will be off the hook.  My gut tells me that it's time to fish the big incoming tides up in the shallows out of Sonoma Creek or Black Point.

It'll be a couple more weeks before I get another crack at em... but hopefully others can take advantage of the next break in the weather.

This trip was alot of fun minus the march of mud at the end.  We arrived to see near flat conditions after getting rained on in the early am while loading up.  Never fails that when we both jumped on our rides that the wind instantly picks up.

Freddie stayed between the pier and bridge before turning south while chucke kinda steered his hobie south west with no problem.  I on the other hand had all my weight in the back of my tarpon and with the wind coming from the northwest it held me to the eastern shoreline.  A couple times I turned west and paddled straight into it but was blown back each time.  It seemed the rough waters and the wind were pushing the front of my yak sideways.  Lesson learned? 

I finally made it to the swing bridge and started marking biguns on the dropoffs.  There was also a nice calm patch of water on the south side of the trestle so I anchored up and called the guys to tell them I was gonna try this area.  Next thing all of us knew was that all hell was breakin loose.  We were all waterproof and just sat it out.  The waves subsided drasticly after this so I paddled back over to the guys to fish the pumphouse area.  Still nothing.  One of the shorter paddles I've done in sturgeon fishing.  I'd go again.  JTF..

Well at least I know that if there is a trip planned you guys won't bail due to less than perfect conditions..

But.... who am I to laugh.  My biggest sturgeon so far is a tiny green one measuring only 18" 

Chuck, thats funny, the nose of your yak is pointing straight at my location in this pic.  The wind was nuts!!!  I was overthere looking at fremont.  i might try a drift chute next time i'm anchored but this might send waves crashing over me sideways.

Yup-

The morning started out which such promise. JTF and Chuck showed up and we gave it our best. Actually, the best part of yesterday was making it back to the shoreline. I felt like I was carrying 3 dozens deeks a quarter mile through a disced pond to get to a blind... not fun. It's not a good sign when we had to use a mud puddle in the parking lot to clean ourselves off. We'll get them next time boys...

dam,im glad i didnt get my anchor release set up yet .sounds like it wouldnt be a great first time in a yak in the bay kind of day!!!!!!!
