Big thanks to Pacific Outfitters for hosting another great Rockfish Wars tournament!  I love the 2-person team and multi-species requirements in this one, as it opens up all sorts of potential strategies.

Luckily, Trinidad Harbor is sheltered from NW swells and has some rocky structure.  Otherwise this tournament would've been a total wash.  The ocean was HUGE: when Matt and I saw house-sized rollers barreling past Blank Rock, we knew the tournament would be decided in the harbor.  Catching good fish in the harbor is not easy, and that was reflected in the scores, with only 3 teams scratching up enough species to qualify for the weigh-in.  I cut my teeth on kayak rockfishing in Trinidad Harbor back in 2009-10, so I at least had some experience fishing the harbor and was familiar with a few techniques that work in the harbor.  Soon Matt started whacking a bunch of blacks and blues, including some solid 18+ inch blacks.  We had some solid harbor fish for most of the day, but it wasn't until 1pm when we finally scored our third species to qualify us for the weigh-in.  I've never been so stoked to get a kelp greenling, haha.  Turns out we'd scraped up enough fish to put us into 1st place!  Species caught included blacks, blues, coppers, a gopher/BnY, short lingcod, and kelp greenling.

Potluck was great, prizes were awesome, and great camaraderie rounded out a verrry tough tournament.  Thanks again to all the organizers.  Can someone post some photos of the Trophy boat launch fiasco?  :smt005

Thanks Aaron, Greg, And Pacific Outfitters for organizing and hosting another great event.

Congrats to the Amayesing Brothers, Matt and Chris for showing us how to get it done.  That was a really impressive stringer for the conditions.

Congrats to my brother for kicking my butt with his 140 point ling, which tied for first in the biggest ling category.  His 28+ inch ling was only 26 inches bigger than mine.

My brother and I tried twice to go out into the open water and both times we scurried on back in.  The biggest swell we went over started at the bottom in 52 fow and topped out at 72 fow.

You and The Bald One were my second pick for winning this. Did you guys take 2nd?

Congrats Chris and Matt for the win! It was sure tough fishing out there. Thanks to Pacific outfitters, Greg and Jef for putting on another great event. Also for anyone that helped gather equipment after my fishing partner flipped at the launch. It could have ended our fishing before it even got started.

We got out to green rock and worked 100 fow for blacks that were few and far between. We were throwing back 16 inch blacks without a second thought that killed our chances later but o well that's just how it goes sometimes. We came across a headless seal floating by flat iron on the way in. Once we got back to the harbor with 10 minutes left in the tourney I dropped one last time with a CC herring and found what I was looking for. First ling hookup of the day and ended up tied for biggest ling.

Great day on the water despite slow fishing.

Oh, almost forgot it wasn't until I got back that I saw that my back hatch was left open after the initial hull check prior to launching. With the conditions we were in that could have turned out pretty bad. Really not cool for the guy that opened it to not close it shut. Nobody touch my sh$& from now on ![emoji3]  lol but from now on I will double check everything if things get messed with prior to launch.

Fun times in the harbor! Somehow I managed to catch about 30 rockfish throughout the day with most being smaller blacks but some good ones in the mix. Thanks to PacOut and all the sponsors for the great event! Looking forward to the next one!

Had a time in huge seas.  It was the first time I'd ever been out when the weather at the top of the wave was different than in the trough.  Balmy suntanning weather in the trough.  Windy and cold with spray on top.  I also saw a pinnacle break that is normally 30 ft under water.  First time for that too.

It was mostly just a handful of locals outside and there was very little catching going on.  It was still way better than last Saturday.  I went down to the pier for breakfast and it was blowing 35+ with gusts over 50 and heavy rain.  The launch and harbor were wrecked.  At least we were able to get out this week, but conditions were very tough.

Looking forward to a summertime TRW7.
