I have never been in one but it seems like they would make a stable fishing platform and it would be easy to have a couple people plus your gear. Any thoughts whether or not these would be safe for ocean use on a calm day? I have never seen one out anywhere so I am guessing there is probably a reason for that that I am not aware of.

I would say NO to that.

They are stable, but they are horribly inefficient.

On a windy day, you would get nowhere.

On a calm lake, with no intentions of going more than 1/2 mile from the dock, with two strong pedalers...  then sure.  I'd bring a cooler full of beer, too.
Fish laugh when I paddle by.  Sometimes they laugh so hard they fall on my hook.

Saw a few people doing that at Lake Chabot yesterday.  They didn't look all that happy, but then again, I didn't see the obligatory cooler of beer in action, so they may have been doing it wrong.

I wouldn't get one of those things anywhere near saltwater though.

Get a hobie if you want a pedal boat,go to lafayette reservoir and rent one and see for yourself
My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it

I have been wanting a hobie for awhile but can't really afford it right now. I will forget about the pedal boat idea and just keep paddling my tarpon until I can get a hobie. I am going up to Idaho for summer vacation and I am hoping to one there that may be a bit cheaper than what we would pay around here. I plan on fishing the big lake up there as well as spending a lot of time in the woods picking huckleberries and morel mushrooms.

I think you'll find the prices on Hobie kayaks are pretty firm around the country.

Other brands, maybe not as "firm"

They are 8.25% less expensive in Oregon than in California. That's a couple hundred bucks.

I will have to stop somewhere in Oregon and maybe pic one up. I figure if nothing else tax is cheaper than it is here in California.
