The search for a 57-year-old Oakland man resumed Tuesday after he went missing while diving for abalone off the coast of Mendocino County a day earlier, authorities said.

A search for the diver was launched Monday when officials received a 911 about his disappearance. The man, who had been searching for the edible mollusks with friends and family, never resurfaced from waters near Moat Creek Beach in Point Arena, officials said.

Redwood Coast Volunteer Fire Department, Mendocino County Sheriff's Deputies and Mendocino County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue volunteers, searched for the man from around 9 a.m. Monday until the evening, according to Lt. Greg Stefani, of Mendocino County Sheriff's Office. The waters were too rough for search divers but the Coast Guard sent a helicopter to search from the air, Stefani said.

Rescuers began a diving search early Tuesday morning, Stefani said. Search helicopters were not launched due to foggy conditions.

Yeah my friend was telling me that he saw the chopper on monday,he actually thought that some people got stuck at the point due to high tide didn't know that someone actually went missing
My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it

Missing diver is a friend's uncle. He's a very good diver, done it for many years. Looks like he made a mistake of being over confident and went off on his own. Search and rescue suspended the search last Wednesday due to rough sea and family members did not know exactly where he was diving. His body was found today washed up on the beach in the general area. Waiting on autopsy report.

that hurts, sorry to hear that. I think being over confident is what leads to mistakes and in some cases all it takes is just 1 mistake to take your life. When I first started Yak fishing I was scared but now going on 2 years I feel like it's easy (being over confident). i think I need to take a step backward and take every launch like it's my first time out which I haven't been doing.
