I used to always have this problem and hated it!  Now I just use pliers to break off the 2 barbs on the jighead collar, then slide on the swimbait.  Zero split baits since then, even when I use the 5" big hammers on 3-4oz jigheads.

I will have to say that with certain brand of multicolored swimbaits, they split right where the 2 colors meet as if they were separate pieces.  One in particular was the Berkeley Powerbait swimbaits, they split where the 2 colors meet everytime.  Never seen that happen with big hammers or other swimbaits.

I never pre-rig my swimbaits and have never experienced this problem.  I rig them right before I send them down and they work fine.  Maybe the cold water make the plastic stiffer???

Bingo. If you are using a four inch bai a four oz head is too big. Then there was someone who bought on eBay and ended up with a product that was packaged and really old.

I didn't even know this was a problem until now. I've had them tear from fish but I just cut them shorter to get to new plastic. Keep it simple

I was going to try the hole punch but Home Depot only sells them online. I'll bring some zip ties just in case and try doing on the water.

Rubber bands work very well for split repair. A few quick wraps on the water and done.

Yep, and if it does split after catching a few dozen fish I just cut it a bit shorter and put it back on. I have caught lings on a 2" square pice of rubber hanging on the end of the hook. It does not matter. Just send anything down and fish will bite it.

An awl and creme brulee torch works best.  Heat the awl and poke the swimbait.  I never have split ones anymore.
