Hi guys,
Those of you who know me, know that I'm strictly a diver. I want to get my 13yo grandson out on the water with me, but for now I think he needs to start Rock fishing off of the kayak. The only thing I know is spearfishing and the more I read about gearing up the more overwhelmed I get.

I bought two of those St Croix TSWC66MF but when I started looking at reels I keep looking at the Avet SC MC, but maybe I need a beginner reel for him. As far a tackle, I'm clueless.

Basically I have the yak, wetsuit, life jacket and that rod. Can someone tell me how much a beginner set up is going to cost and maybe help me get this set up. I need to have this dialed as soon as possible but at least in time for Albion in July.

Thanks

I have some tackle I will gift you for him (jig heads and swimbaits). only charge is your word that you make sure to have the safety equipment and training you need for him before you use it. I recommend a cheaper reel until you know what he likes best and gets more comfortable. Like learning to drive you may not want to start with a Mercedes. Does he reel right or left handed?

Thanks scooter. He's right handed. I don't want to start him out with an expensive reel. That's my point. When I start looking I think about which style of reel he will end up using and I keep going up and up.

I'm not sure what you mean by safety equipment. I have dive gear and a life jacket for him. He can get on and off in deep water.  What else would he need, a radio?

You should be able to. My Knife cane with provisions for air hose/BCD mount, and it also works on my PFD.

Okuma Magda Pro would be a good inexpensive reel to put on those new rods btw. My 2 cents I removed my previous post because I see you have 260 posts and have been around for a while. And I didn't see that you will be accompanying him.

Lol.

This is perfect. I appreciate your concern.

I am very experienced kayak diving, and I have taken the boy diving a couple times. I wouldn't leave him alone. The thing is his dad (my daughters husband) is a little scared of the water. If it wasn't for my daughter, I wouldn't get to take the boy on the water at all. I think his dad will be much more comfortable letting him fish than dive.

I'm willing to do whatever I need to do to get the boy on the water, even if I have to gear up him and his dad. If I don't get him out there now, he'll never take it up.

How often and where do you dive I'd be happy to give your grandson a rod and reel.

You might keep an eye out for the next L2 kayak fishing Safety & Rescue class at CCK, or even just take a 'regular' class that covers self rescue. That may well go a ways towards convincing Pa that he'll be safe.

Thanks seabird, that's a good list!  I like the idea of safety training. Obviously divers and anglers have different safety issues so it would probably be a good idea for both of us to learn the specifics for self rescue.

Supervato, I live in Colusa, I dive in Fort Bragg, Albion, pretty much all of Mendo county and occasionally I do Stillwater and Monterey. I appreciate the offer. Hopefully I'll get to bring him the Albion open again this year, he had a blast last year so I want to get him involved while he's still excited about it.
