the pulling it out of the mouth due to no stretch braid idea...if using braid it is a good idea to use a rod that has the soft tip and will give some, like the Trevala L or ML. The rod takes the load and doesn't rip it out of the lips.

Nice ling on straight 12lb mono.

Good stuff Dustin!

What are the specs on the spinning outfit if you don't mind.  I'd be interested in doing something like that.

Ya know "mikeinfresno" said something that makes sense my rods are sticks compared to others I see at the coast and he is right mine have not much give at the tips and this could be why I miss strikes with braided. With braided and very light tipped rods it will be a lot more forgiving than with my rod. I do prefer a stout rod. I just bought a lighter rod that is medium/heavy 7ft I think I will put braided on that one and see how it reacts when fishing deep water. The more I think about it with a lighter rod when a large fish is pulled near the kayak with a lighter tip it would bend
and have some give where mine wont.
I still have to figure the jigs out I really like using two lures with the weight on the bottom I catch a lot of blacks and blues this way I just have to figure a way to do it. I like the DIY stuff for this.

Has anyone on here used the "fg" knot for tying leader onto braid. I put about s 20-25 foot mono leader on my braid with this knot on my last outing and it held up good. I think I had some bad mono cause I broke off at my dropper loop a lot on snags but I just worked my leader shorter and shorter throughout the day. It never failed at the braid/mono connection.
The knot is fairly easy to tie even bobbing around in a small plastic boat and easy to remember and goes through the guides really good.

The FG knot is my new go to knot for braid to leader connections. This video is a good example of how to tie it fairly easily:

Wow I like the knot but out on the ocean in my kayak it ain't gonna happen. I will try this for my fresh water trout for trolling I dont get many snags trolling.

OK so back on point it seems like the consensus is to use:
40# Braided on main line
30# Mono on the Jigs
Using a Rod: Medium/heavy with a fast/moderate tip

The only problem I see is the 30# jig set up that seems light to me especially if using a Dropper knot and rocks lesions from scrapping the rocks.

I've been running 50# braid with 30# mono leader attached with a ball bearing swivel for several years without trouble. Check your leader for abrasions and check your knots after every fish or snag. If in doubt as to line condition swap out immediately.

I run 80# braid with 30-40# mono store bought as well as custom tied shrimp fly rigs customs get a surgeons knot. To break off a snag I hand line the slack and wrap it around my fish bat 3-4 times, this is the important part so read really slow, stay centers in your boat, keep the bat close to the gunwal, roll the bat as to real in the slack and once you got tension on the line give a "fast steady jerk"upwards, and no I'm not talking about the guy that paddles faster then you and catches more fish.

Another rigging tip to help use lighter line is using a better loop for your droppers. The old dropper loop is a terribly weak knot, and will reduce your line strength greatly. I've been using this "Kiwi Dropper Loop" knot and it allows lighter line leaders without having a super weak dropper.

noticed nothing was mentioned about using Fluorocarbon leaders...I use #25 Fluoro..don`t seem to have problems with knots ( use a Uni-Uni w/Braid)..breaks off when hung up easier than mono due to lower /less stretch and sensitivity seems better versus when i have tried mono.... plus an old crusty kayak fisherman taught me and I just fish that ever since... :smt003

Here's something like I might do out in the garage, but this guy did it with more data collection and analysis,

I'm curious as to why a dropper rig is even used for rock fishing. Only two lures allowed so tie a short piece of mono  to top eye of swivel followed by a longer mono shot tied to bottom eye of same swivel. Tie shrimp fly or hoochie on top. Weighted swimbait or hard jig on bottom. Simple and effective. No knots mid line.

This is the rig I am trying to duplicate you can buy them pretty cheap anywhere what I don't like with the store bought one is the loops are to short and puts the lure close to the main jig line I can get multiple hook ups with blacks and blues this way. They also can be used with one fly and a lead head jig for the weight I just remove one fly. I do catch lincod this way too its some times hanging on a blue. I have a heck of a time with lead heads with treble hooks on the bottom I lose so much gear. If I loose a few shrimp flies and a home made weight not a big deal.

In Oregon we can use 3 so 2 shrimp flies with a lead head triple hookups can be fun.
