Hi All,
I recently got a Jackson Kraken and so far I am supper stoked with it.  Took it out for the first time last Sunday at Pigeon Pint Light House.  Good times but I noticed it was in desperate need of a rudder.  Looking on line they seemed a bit expensive and well easy to make, so I made one.  Started out searching designs on line and started drawing up some plans in Auto Cadd.  First I decided to cut a prototype out of ¼” ply wood with a CO2 laser, here is my prototype with a few different rudder shapes, made up a “fish tail” one for fun.

Took it home and did some measurements and made a few changes and then cut it out of stainless and aluminum with a CNC plasma cutter, grabbed some stainless screws etc… and here it is.  Waiting for some stainless cable and then I will get the foot pedals set up it in the next day or so.

Looks great.

I'm certainly not advocating buying a rudder kit, but it's buying all the tools that's the really expensive part.  That will be a hard sell for the wife.

Apart from the personal pride and enjoyment of the project, it's probably only cheaper if you have easy/free access to a CO2 laser, CNC machine, and plasma cutter.

Nice work -- what'll it take to get you into production for one?

Cheers,
Brad

Awesome work!! Wish I would have thought of that for my Kraken.
Cheers!!

That is awesome!!! Way to go bro! It would take a lot of time for a diy guy to do this. Even without all the computer driven stuff, you would still need to have a plasma cutter, a TIG, a milling machine and drafting skills. Not to mention the  fabrication and math skills to make  it happen. Stainless can be a PITA to work with. Mad props on the job! Looks great!

Thanks all. Love do diy everything. I would make a kayak but a roto molder set up is a little cost prohibitive!

I'll let u know how it works on the water.
