This is so sad. Prayers to a fellow kayak angler and his family.

This is a very dangerous sport. Please, please, please take every precaution to keep you safe while on your kayaks. Use a buddy system and stay close enough to help each other, take classes to help you know how to react when things get out of control, practice annually or more frequently so you are always ready, know your abilities and plan for the worse, and this is one of the most important ALWAYS WEAR YOUR PFD!!!

Live your life, the way you want to be remembered. Don't have any regrets, we only get this one dance to make it count. Start at your eulogy, and work backwards.

I couldn't find much information on the circumstances.  Only real thing I found was that someone on TKF had made a no go decision due to winds in that same area on that day.

Also heard he and his friend were separated in the fog.  No PDF found on him when they found his body.

Sucks

I just can't get my head around the concept of going out on a Kayak in perfect conditions let alone marginal ones without a properly fitted PFD with an attached marine radio, wearing exposure gear appropriate for the water temperature
never met a Dry Fly I didn't like

Very sad news. I still cannot wrap my head around why people go out without proper safety precautions.

Sending good vibes to the family though.

Very sad news. I still cannot wrap my head around why people go out without proper safety precautions.
Lack of experience.  Cluelessness.  stupidity.  Last weekend I ran into a pair of kayakers on Lindbergh Lake in Montana who were paddling sit-on-top kayaks with no spray skirts or PFDs, wearing street clothing.  The ice had broken up on the northern mile and a half of the lake two days earlier, but the rest of the lake was still covered with ice.  There was some loose ice floating in front of the launch site.

It still looked like winter in the mountains.

The air temperature was in the 60’s, but I was dressed appropriately for the water temperature.

About a mile and a half up the lake I encountered unbroken ice.

I was trolling along the edge of the ice, when a couple showed up paddling in sit-inside kayaks.  Neither was wearing a PFD or a spray skirt.  The guy was wearing a cotton shirt and cotton shorts.  I guess if you’re tough, you don’t need a lot of fancy equipment.  I took this picture later when I saw them at the launch site.  I wish I had taken a picture of them next to the ice, but I was busy fishing.

Not wanting to be an asshole, I didn’t mention that they were dangerously unprepared for the water temperature, and should have been wearing PFDs even if the water had been warm.  But I should have said something.
