Hi all,  :smt006

I know it has been a while since my last post.  My excuse - we have been home in South Africa for two months enjoying family, fishing and plenty of sunshine :smt001. We spent most of our time in a little fishing village called Stuisbaai, which is located at the southern most tip of Africa.  This place has great fishing and although we did have access to yaks  :smt013 as the sport is still very new in this region of SA, we did see the enormous potential of being able to kayak fish in these waters.  I thought that I would post some of pics of the fish we caught fishing from the rocks in front of my folks spot as well as some fish the kids pulled in fishing the upper reaches of a river.  The mouth of this river opens along a 11mile stretch of unspoilt beach - just ripe for kayak fishing! I also included a great shot of a comet(Mc Naught) that was seen a few days before we left.

The first couple of fish in the pics are known as Mussel Crackers and are tremendous fighters.  We caught them using big red crabs as bait - although when gutted their stomachs were filled with sea urchins.
The kids caught small garrick and a kabeljou schoolie, my dad is holding one of its big brothers, although as far as "cob" go this is an average size, with catches of 20 - 40kg fish quite normal.  These fish are normally caught using live minnows.  The pic of my Dad holding the two fish - those are called White Steenbras - not related to the seabass -and are caught using live shrimp or bloodworm.  These guys all put up a tremdous fight when hooked - can't wait to tackle these waters on the yak!

South Africa ... ahhhh!!!  Nice report.

Looks like I'll be heading down there in July, not entirely sure where yet, but working on it.  Any pointers on the fishing would be much appreciated.

Those are some cool looking fish.  While I'm not familiar with the actual species, they all seem to be members of fish families I do recognize.

The "Mussel crackers" and the "White Steenbras" both look to be very large porgies or sea bream (family Sparidae).  Bill might have fished for porgy in Texas as a kid.

The "Garrick" seems to be a jack of some sort.  (family Carangidae)  They remind me of an elongated pompano.

Both the "Cob" and the "kabeljou"look like drum or croakers (family Sciaenidae).  These are in the same family as white sea bass and corvina.

Cool!  Once you know where you are headed let me know - any time I get to give out info about SA - well I'm stoked!!!!.  Hey Brian, thanks for the info on the fish.  The "kabeljou" also looks alot like the "barramundi" caught in Australia.

Cool report - as for yakking down there, isn't this the place where I've seen videos of white sharks jumping out of the water to eat seals?   :smt009   :smt001
