In case you need it - I've just built and tried out one, based on this design: http://www.yangler.com/2013/03/05/ti-tiller-extension/ . Costco sells hiking poles for $20-something (I bought them last year, but I think I saw them again yesterday).

Really makes a lot of difference, much easier to steer when you hike (steering with your foot @ 20kts is not fun ;) ).

I'm retracting my recommendation - and, actually, issuing a warning, as this could be disastrous.
