So I'm sick in bed with a cold binge watching scary movies and pondered this question. Could Shelter Cove be haunted?

I thought of this before a few years ago after reading Mario Machi's book "Gem of the Lost Coast". As I recall the book describes a few tragic events that occurred there that are "haunting" worthy.

So has anyone ever heard of such a tale? You have to admit its a perfect isolated setting for a Steven King novel.

Yes.  It is haunted, or more accurately cursed.  This is well known in local lore.

I did a quick search on the net and didn't find anything......

The early settlers in 1860 or so murdered everyone in the sinkiyone village at the cove.  There was a curse put on by those indians that were murdered.

Mario Machi (the statue in town is of Mario, Mario's landing, etc.) came as a young man and wrote a book about it.  You can find it on amazon.  He also was a POW of the Japanese during WWII and survived the Bataan death march.

In the 1960s the cove was carved up into the many parcels that you see today, most still undeveloped.  During a meeting of developers in 1971 plans were finalized to imporve marketing to the world.  All the bigwig out of area developers had flown in to meet and come to an agreement.  When they left, their plane crashed into the ocean, killing most of them.  That has been directly attributed to the curse, if you are inclined to believe in that sort of thing.

A USCG CH-65 crashed into the bluffs just down the beach from the launch in 1994, killing all 4 coasties on board.

There is also indian gold that was recovered from a spanish galleon buried in the hills around there somewhere.  The natives had a good amount of spanish coins (for no apparent good reason) and claimed to have a lot more before they were murdered. Rumors of the hidden gold have persisted for 150+ years.

There's plenty more, that;s just the highlights.

Info about the developer plane crash excerpted from this link http://ernielb.blogspot.com/2010/07/more-shelter-cove-legends.html

@ Anonymous. The air crash you are referring to was on June 27th, 1971. I lost my husband Jim Stevens and my father-in-law in that crash and it is still as fresh today in my mind as it was then, almost 41 years ago.
Date / Time: Sunday, June 27, 1971 / Time 7:00 p.m.
Operator / Flight No.: Sea Park Ltd. charter service / Non-Commercial
Location: Shelter Cove, Humboldt County, Calif.
Details and Probable Cause: The vintage Douglas DC-3 (N90627) was on a return trip to Los Angeles, with an intermediate stop in San Jose, from a private airstrip at Shelter Cove, a coastal resort and real estate development, and was carrying members of the resort company’s executive and sales staffs.
Prior to takeoff, the pilot failed to remove the wind-gust locks that secured the aircraft’s rudder and elevator. With these control surfaces immobilized, the aircraft was unable to gain height during its takeoff roll.
The plane, with 21 passengers and three crew on board, bounced several times along the runway, struck an electrical transformer and a building, became briefly airborne, soared over a cliff and plunged into the Pacific Ocean 150 yards offshore.
Two crew members and 15 of the passengers died in the crash. The surviving crew member and three of the passengers received serious injuries in the mishap; the remaining three passengers sustained minor injuries.
Pilot error.
Fatalities: 17 -- 15 passengers and 2 crew members.

Ghosts are fiction. Hauntings are fiction. So... No, Shelter Cove is not haunted.

Another local legend worth reading about is Albert Etter.... That dude kept a phenomenal fishing journal.

Etter also holds several apple patents and experimented with hybrid apples, berries, and other fruits that can still be found today.  He was a contemporary of Luther Burbank, just not nearly as famous or prolific.

Burbank Shmurbank. I bet Etter outfished him all the time.

Yeah, when he wasn't complaining about the sub bag limit on blacks. Or eating McDonald's french fries or looking at his Shasta daisies.

I'm pretty sure the bar at the top of the boat ramp is possessed by demons. Last year I saw Bloodbath's head spin 360 degrees on his shoulders and Big Jim was speaking in 1st century latin.
