On my first dive of 2014 I found a crack that had two wolf eels in it...super cool to see, and had no desire to shoot them, but had no GoPro on me so no footage.

Have gone back to the crack to look for them several times since then but they seemed to be getting forced out by Monkeyface so I have shot the monkey invaders in the hopes that the wolves will return.  :smt003

On my recent dive I stopped by the hole again and one of the wolves was back!   :smt007

Had my GoPro so filmed her for a bit and was able to pull some cool screen grabs.

Stoked I finally got one of them on camera!!

Sincerely,

Jim

ps...you can also see a pretty decent sized abalone (for Monterey County at least) below the urchin and stuck on the left wall of the vertical crack in the first pic.  :smt004

So compared to monkeys how do they taste?

Have seen a lot of morays down south too. Wonder if those are worth shooting?

My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it

They taste great...but...for the size of the fish the meat yield is pretty low compared to a Ling or a Monkey because even though they are looong they are pretty slender...can see some food prep pics here...

I've taken two in the past 5 years but have passed on the last several I have seen...

They do mate for life and are not as abundant as the other fish we can harvest...not saying I won't take another one in the future, and definitely won't criticize anyone who does take them, but right now I am more jazzed on just checking them out.  :smt001

So, basically, you're saying they taste great and they're less filling. Maybe they should be renamed Lite Fish (from Miller)...

They actually learn to recognize people. Are fairly smart, long lived, also don't generally bite unless provoked. Can be really curios and come out to see what you are. Cool critters. Thanks for sharing the underworld with us topsiders :smt007
my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

I guess a spear through the head could be considered a provocation then...  :smt003
