Still a good deal at $11.99!?

Honestly, I'd say its still a good deal at $11.99.  Of course $7.99 is better!   

I've had several $15-20 ones crap out pretty early and weren't as bright as this one.

Man, I know what you are saying. I probably busted well over 10 of these. I bought a nice 40 dollar black diamond one last year and it crapped out. I was pissed.  This is 7.99 and if i get a dozen times out of it i consider that worth my money. I'm not expecting too much tho.

my only headlamp that has lasted is a basic petzl one.  all others are broken or held together with duct tape    we'll see how these last.

On occasion I have seen the North Face outlet store in Berkeley carry Petzl headlamps at a VERY significant discount.

I love my Petzl's, although they discontinued the model I liked the most, they are very well built, and generally last a long time on a set of batteries.  I think all of them are IPX 4 rated, there are some reviews I recall where they submerged in a glass of water for around 5 mins and it kept working while submerged, no worries at all in the rain.  The Tikka 2 was my favorite, looks like a Tikka 100 is about the same.  Really like the flip up and down screen to make it focused or wide beam, quick and easy.  The low end ones are only 15-20$ on Amazon and I'd bet they outlast your other headlamps by several years.

Black Diamond is actually a really good brand. The quality of the headlamps are pretty good, however, the durability wasn't the greatest. With that said i really use and abuse all my equipment. I need something military grade.
