The home built teardrop seems like the best option.
If you're considering homebuilt, you've gotta check this out. I'm really considering giving this a shot when it goes on sale.

Wow, this is an educational thread. Never had any idea there would be so many scams on something like this. I must be naive...
Are you pondering what I’m pondering?

Very cool. The article says complete kits start at about $1500. I wonder how complete that would really be...

These optins seem mandatory to me..

]quote]The roof has been reinforced from the start for roof-racks, so you can carry kayaks or bicycles atop the CLC Teardrop.  An optional lockable storage box, sized to fit a 48-quart cooler, mounts forward of the camper on the trailer tongue. [/quote]

And it fits on a harbor freight flatbed. This looks awesome.

Oooooh. Totally in the pocket for my headspace.  If I could get my wife to go along with this (and my folks' to use their garage for the build :)), I'd be all over that.  As for 'complete' it looks like it's everything but the trailer, but like Crash mentioned, it was designed with a harbor freight $200 special in mind.

I think I've got a live one to check out tomorrow after work.

Early '70s aristocrat lo-liner, coming in about $700 under budget.  Looks worn but original, and I didn't see any interior water damage in the pix.

Seller was atypical, even for CL: he seems to go about 2 or 3 days before responding to anything.  Didn't sound sketchy on the phone, just lazy...still, I'll be staying on high alert for scams & keeping fingers crossed.

Wish me luck!

Best of luck.  I'd be surprised if there is no leakage.  Keep us informed!!!!

Thanks, and yes, I'll also be shocked if there's no leakage.  Will let you know how it goes!

Take a good look underneath at the frame.  I loaned an older trailer to a friend who made it to Arizona before the frame snapped.

Ooof.  That would be a bummer and a half.  Will do.

Have postponed the viewing until tomorrow to be able to have a more leisurely look in more daylight that this evening would have allowed.

Actually I acted butt hurt for about 10 seconds, then signed the pink over to him.

update: we have, uh, success?

Went to Santa Rosa from OAK on Saturday to meet Mr. Aristocrat...
Holy hell what a POS.
Both the trailer and the guy.

Ooof.

To salvage the gas money and time on the road, we called another CL seller in Sonoma about a Shasta.  It was out of our budget, but hey, we're in the area, it's on the way home, why not?  Turns out we were able to see it, and get it for less than half his asking--and about $400 under budget.  It's the smaller Compact model.  10' long, 12' bumper to hitch, exactly the little box I was hoping for (hey, I'm towing with a 4 cylinder minivan with a supercharger :) ).
Frame/ leaf springs/ axle/ wheels/ tires (proper ST) are all in pretty good shape, appliances are all intact (who thought it would be safe to have a propane mantel lantern built into a living space?), paperwork is good, and it's got permanent plates!

Score.

Now to clean out the black widows & wasp nests (at least there's no evidence of rodent activity) and get to fixin' her up.
