I have the Sony Xperia Z3, fully waterproof,  I had it submerged in water and didn't notice that it fell out of my pocket until the phone started to ring,  answered the call with no problems

Cell service on the coast? Yeah, that would be nice.  :smt001

I always take my phone on the water in a pelican 1050 case.  Hopefully I never have to use it for rescue but I don't have a second VHF for my wife onshore, so that's my link to her.

Samsung S5 and a Otterbox Preserver case go with me on every trip, tucked in my pdf pocket. It's been swimming multiple times, sometimes just so I could cool off and others because I did something stupid and feel out of the kayak. Couldn't be happier with this setup,  takes a beating and keeps on working!

Yes.  IP5+ with LP case and Lifejacket.  can't live without the nav apps and OTW pix.  Entering the home screen from locked screen is difficult with wet fingers so tell that beotch Siri to do your bidding!

Lifeproof case that is stored in a dry bag inside the hull. I only have it with me for communication purposes and rarely pull it out.

Coming from a guy that lost 2 very expensive phones last year, both on otw...here are your options.   :smt005

1) Don't take it with you
2) Don't take it with you
3) If you must take it with you, make sure its in a fully waterproof case + float.  Waterproof won't help you if its at the bottom of the lake/ocean.   :smt044

If you ain't first, you're last.

:smt044 :smt044 I thought there was a "third" incident, but was saved.

I always take my phone with me especially when I had my lifeproof case stashed in my pfd pocket. Lifeproof quality went downhill and I'm stuck using ziplock bags. I never leave any valuables in my car in case of break ins, towed, etc.

There was a 3rd incident which required the use of Keith's salmon net to fish it out...thus my 3rd point about having a float.   :smt044

I bring (2) phones OTW with me. One is my primary iPhone 6s Plus sits in my hull, in a dry bag with its hotspot enabled. Then I have my old iPhone 5s w/ hitcase which is waterproof and has a fisheye lens. I tether the phone so I can utilize my apps and still communicate with the boss (girlfriend) via iMessage. Also I have Tapatalk and Instagram I frequently check when I'm taking a break. Also the iPhone 5 stays in my PFD.

I keep my iPhone in a lifeproof case in my PFD pocket. Never dropped one in the drink (knock on wood).

I prefer to tether it, as I've had floaty things float away (presumably), never to be seen again. I've never lost anything on a tether.

Well, except there was that expensive handheld GPS, where the tether snapped, causing the unit to fly out of my hand like it'd been fired from a slingshot. I can still see it in my minds eye, and it all happens in super-slow motion, including the part where it flutters from side-to-side as it (slowly, slowly) sinks out of sight. But, that happened a couple years ago, and I'm so over it now. I mean, who needs all of those secret fishing spots anyway?
I don't like stuff that sucks.
