This will be my first conventional reel and u wanted some with a small spool so I can guide the lines easily. Just wondering if the max drag of 9lbs at strike would be enough or should I opt for more? ie. Raptor or Lx

More than enough drag for anything around here. The 2 speed is overkill really in a reel that size.

You would be better off getting two quality reels for that price especially given how hard the salt is on gear. Kayak fishing is brutal on reels especially.

If this is your first conventional reel check out the shimano TLD 15/30 in a star drag or the charter special 1000 if you want a lever drag. Both are a little over $100 and will handle anything in our area.

I've been using the Penn Squall20lw.  It is a solid reel.  Star drag.  Easy to strip down and maintain.   Quality reel for the price...about $100 -$120.

Man thay is like a guy asking a question on a benz and the salesman refers him to a honda accord.  Lol

I have a tr100g as a spare.  Its great and dunked it many times.  Sometimes without even cleaning it afterwards.   I just dont like the back slop.  But its a great reel for the price.

Ok I'll try out something else, I want to enjoy my fishing trips and not overkill it.

I would third the Avet. We have the Sx on a Trevala Medium and it rocks. Lightweight, very solid, and it will take anything we have in Cali, shy of a huge BFT.

I've caught everything from salmon to rockfish to a 60# rooster on that reel paired with a trevala

SX or SXJ is perfect for our waters. You can go up to the MXL. No need for anything larger than the MXL. I use the MXL for sturgeon especially in deep waters with strong current. My buddy has the SXJ for striper and salmon. No need for a 2 speed up here unless you're chasing YFT or sailfish down south.

Wow, thats a great deal on the SXJ, is that the smallest one they make?

I feel like an idiot for buying a plastic okuma from OPS for $80
