Cayucos

Can anyone hook me up with info on yak fishing/diving in the Cayucos area?

My wife and her college roommates are renting a house in Cayucos for April 27-29 for their 50th birthdays and two of us hubbies are yak fishermen and yak divers. 

But, we know nothing about the area.  Where should we head?  Where are the good put in's?  What type of fishing and diving is to be had in late April?

Too bad you're not here a bit later for RCG. But fun can be had and love can be found if conditions are right. There are about a half dozen good places to launch in Cayucos if the southerly swell is down. My two favorites are from the north parking lot at the pier, again if the swell is right, and at Ellysly Creek (personal favorite). At the pier you can drop your yak practically right at the waters edge, Ellysly Creek requires a very short Roleez trip.

That area is a fantastic fishery! There can be outstanding perch fishing at Cayucos beach and from the pier and several easy launches as littoral mentioned.A short drive northward on HWY1 brings you to rocky stretches with launches around San Simeon providing HOT yakfishing action for rockfish,lings,cabazon,and halibut.Check the regs. though as rockfish season may vary and is in a different "section" than other parts of NorCal.

My family and I have been going to Cayucos for the lighted boat/fireworks show on the 4th of July for the last twenty years or so.It's gotten so crowded during that time of year now that I've been camping in Morro or San Simeon to yakfish and/or take rockfish/albacore trips on Virg's in Morro in August through October to beat the crowds and get those glassy fall weather windows.

That's a great area and fishing opportunities there are many!

aaron, we'll be down on the 4th of july as well.  we have a place on 16th street across from the beach.  despite rumors to the contrary, i actually own a kayak and have paddled it before.     hopefully they won't close rockfish in july again.  alan

Thanks for the invite littoral.I may have to look you up for a rf session.I will definitely be making my way down there this year.Looks like we'll be able to fish it as soon as May this year.I can make it down there in about three and a half hours.So when the weather looks good I'm there.

I'm confused. This looks like Villa Creek to me. Isn't this the area where the trail was closed due to the Snowy Plover nesting? I've launched and paddled this area a good bit. Have not fished it but sure would like to join you this spring when RF opens. Chine Harbor, just north is suppose to be very good for halibut.

Villa Creek, Ellysly Creek, they fork near the mouth so the names are generally used interchangeably on the beach. I prefer Ellysly for this site simply to avoid confusion with the other Villa Creek up the road in the Silver Peak Wilderness.

I've heard the same re: flatties. To be honest the only flatties that I have ever caught were as bycatch. I'm usually so focused on RCG that I never get around to specifically targeting them. That's going to change this year.

Cayucos is about 15 minute south of Cambria

Seems like all of the GWs around here dine at Avila Beach. There was that teacher that got killed a few years ago and last year they shut down Avila for a few days after some nasty shark on seal action right near the lineup on labor day.

I'm not familiar with any attacks up in Moonstone but it really wouldn't surprise me. There's tons of seals there and right up the beach there is a massive elephant seal colony.

My first time kayaking was in Avila Bay. There was a seal that kept coming up to the boat and knocking me out. The hatred started on that day.
