braid    :white
Yes!.... I love being able to feel every little tick and knowing whether i'm dragging over sand or pebbles.  With braid, you can fish super thin line equivalent to 2-4 lb diameter mono.  For my leader, I use mono ... of course!

Oh Man that sux.  I love Solar XT.  When potholing the kelp on a clear day, nothing beats looking at that thin green line down below.  better try and stock up if still around.

OK....let's have a little derby between the "mono" boys and the "braided" guys - let's see who catches more  :smt002

Art...you in????  :smt003

In, and I'll go super retro, folding beach chair, cooler, sand spike, 12' rod w/ a bell on the tip and a baited hi/lo and pyramid sinker.

Been a while since I went perchin but I have experienced the unpleasant feeling of braid cuts sand and salt, crazy braid twist resulting in bird nested spin gear and getting snagged in a submerged strand of kelp resulting in a forty minute battle royale in the surf.  I'm about hassle free fishing and just enjoying a day on the water nowadays.  Mono is cheap, simple and still effective.

two of our best perchers are aaron and alien.

aaron uses 10lb suffix mono and alien uses maxima ultra green 8lb.

I used 8lb solar xt again this last weekend with 10lb big game for leader and no break offs, tangles, cuts, etc.

I'm barely adequate with a grub but I got a couple that bent my rod and one even took drag.

should have debarbed greg's son riley's hook probably,  :smt002

Art, I watched a guy use a circle hook and sliding sinker pyramid and nail a pile of perch and one big striper
last may.  I made a real tall pvc rod holder like he uses I want to try this sometime.

mooch, the fact that me, greg and riley (and many others) landed fish while you were being skunked was
a great gift to us! I'm starting to think you might have done it on purpose...  :smt017

just to make Bill feel better!

steves, it was your and chuckE's stinson post a couple years back that made me try perching. thanks!

I caught a BSP my very first cast ever after reading your post! I couldn't believe it! was so stoked!

J

SWEET!!! That's what the board is about i think-- a little post and someone is stocked on fishing something they didn't try before.

I've been exploring a bit more along Pt Reyes now...had always hit kehoe occassionally, but now expandng out to Limantour and beaches further south of there. Limantour's my new Stinson...the structure isn't as prominent, but it feels more remote and wild- and its actually a bit closer to my house than stinson. Let me know when you're headed out- would love to hook up

I am a "south of the gate" boy.  so you got the north of the gate beaches to yourself.

but I got some secret spots down here even aaron doesn't know,  :smt002.

I call one 'the cracks'. that was where my first grub cast ever was. I cast from a bed of mole crab shells on the beach.
the shells were like 6" deep. I guess it wasn't a surprise I hooked up!

I had surfed the spot a bunch of times and seen the mole crabs.

that spot is a little rough most days tho.

well sign me up...i'd love to make a trip down there. I grew up fishing SF and san mateo beaches...but haven't fished much down there since i left back in 90.  i've hike down below fort funston a few times (can't recall the name of that beach off the old road?), and did pretty good- but i haven't been down past pescadero or pomponio for a long long time.
