I searched but didn't find a relatively recent thread on vacuum sealers, so-

My old vacuum sealer died recently after 15 years or so.  I figure its time to treat myself to something nicer, faster, less prone to overheating, and maybe even portable/battery operated or runs off of a car charger.

Does anyone have any recommendations of what they have that they are happy with?

Thanks.

I have a game version of food saver from Bass Pro.  It works for most everything I need.  It does get hot and needs to cool between sealing when I have a big job.

When I am ready to upgrade I am going to get a Weston brand sealer.  Probably the 3000 version.  You can control the suction and it has a wider sealer band.  If you are dealing with wet items you can keep the suction going until you see no more moisture being pulled out and then hit the seal.  The other one has a timed operation and often doesn't suck all the moisture out before it starts to seal.  And if there is to much moisture in the bag it can have a bad seal and that's when you will get frost bite/ freezer burn.

Nice but that sealer is too big..........I like to take mine to Mexico with me and that would take up too much room.

Is that the only model that allows control of when to seal?

Not sure Hojoman, I just saw one last year in action and it was solid.  I wanted to be able to seal whole chickens and wanted the 15" bags  which some smaller units can't handle.

The last two I have had, I had to resort to double sealing the ends, kept popping the seal after in the freezer for a while, and the meat looked like it was Santa with all the white frost on it. Enough to piss off the pope. Wish they sealed a little better  :smt013

get some thicker bags. those 3rd party ones don't pop as much as the stock foodsaver ones.

$500 is a bit spendy but this looks pretty sweet.

This one?  Does a DC pump mean that it will run on battery power and not plugged in to an electric outlet?

http://www.cabelas.com/product/home/save-on-vacuum-sealers-bags%7C/pc/105625080/c/481688280/cabela-s-15-commercial-grade-vacuum-sealer/1861234.uts?destination=%2Fbrowse.cmd%3FcategoryId%3D481688280

The difference in power - Weston 3000 is 935 watt motor, Cabelas is 200 watt motor.  While 935 > 200, what is that going to mean from a performance comparison standpoint?  Is this a Cadillac vs. Ferrari?  I'm guessing the 200w motor is fine, but anyone have any input?
