Holy crap man!   Way to survive!

To put it lightly .. :smt001

Some of the things that I have researched and things I have meant to acquire are, a compact blow up flotation that fits at the end of the paddle that would have aided in stability with reentering my kayak, filling unused space with pool noodles. Some one once posted about swim fins. A better semi-dry top. Most importantly losing some weight and practicing my self rescue more often.

Glad to hear you survived your ordeal!

If your left shoulder is prone to popping out, a rescue ladder is probably a better aid than a paddle float in getting back onto your kayak using just 1 arm. Also invest in a hand operated bilge pump to drain your Hobie.

I think I may aquire the same and add a flare gun. Seems maybe it would have gotten you some attention earlier.

Definitely check that out.

Had it about 5 years roughly. It is waterproof. And I always do a radio check when I go out. It was probably submerged to long I am guessing. Maybe time for a new one.

Do you think a whistle would have helped? Serious question and thanks for sharing the experience.

I see many good things coming from your experience. Great information so glad you made it, and passing along information. My friend on his Cobra explorer couldn't sit on his seat pad with out being top heavy. Note to self when adding to seat cussion ck to see where tipping point is.

glad you made it back..always good when others are there to help...maybe solo ocean kayaking is a really bad idea..I know I go alone sometimes but maybe need to stop
Thanks for sharing and hope you heal up bro
We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be.

I want to stay as close to the edge as I can without going over. Out on the edge you see all kinds of things you can't see from the center.

Thanks for sharing and glad you made it back.  I have the Marine background but my body is not the same as when I was in.  I got hit by a wave last week and thrown into some rocks.  I hyperextended my arm and immediately called the dive after 30 seconds.  Could have been worse and on the way home lost all feeling in my arm.

I carry all the recommended gear along with the manual pump.  But when one arm goes which has happened to me it makes it difficult to use all your gear.  I have water logged one spot connect and have had one of my VHF radios on off switch break off while turning it on.

You just never know.  I guess it does help to fish areas with more traffic just in case something goes wrong.

Still waiting on that dive.  Between the two of us we have one set of good arms and should be good to go.
