That is beautiful. Thank you for sharing. Makes me think of my Dad. Maybe a picture of you with some of his prize possessions in the picture he could hang on his wall to know you are thinking about him. Im not much of a person for material items from my sons. I sometimes prefer more of a personal card or pics of them to remind me of them when they are not around. :smt001

Thanks for the thoughtful comments.  I know my dad wants me to have the things that were so special to him.
The picture is a great idea, Alex

Ain't gonna lie, this brought a tear to my eye.  Just through your words we can all feel how much your dad loves you.  It truly is one of those moments where nothing needs to be said, you can just feel the love.  It really made me think back to my dad's last days and moments we shared like that.  Thanks for sharing your story with us...treasure every moment!

A really touching story... My dad is 83 and the physical limitations are taking away some of the things we used to love to do together, hiking and fishing, getting out in nature. He's so happy that I've gotten a kayak now and have been getting back to the fishing that we enjoyed together, so many years ago.

Yes Sir. It is strange how life revolves. I couldn't hardly wait for my Sons to be out on there own so I could find some free time for myself. One is out on his own and the other soon to leave off to college next year. I already miss the one that has left and knowing I will miss the  one getting ready to leave. Seeing pictures of them on my walls brings smiles to my face of times we have shared together. Thanks again for sharing. These are the type of posts I enjoy most.   :smt001

Your Dad is am amazing man. This is the bond that so many kids never get. I too broke up a little at the end of your story but then smiled knowing that this is so right and so loving. I would love to hang and fish with you someday if you can stand grumpy old farts like me. Life is precious. Have a great day man!!!

Great story, thanks for sharing.  I have some of my grandfathers tools, some of my dads tools, and fishing rods from a few deer old friends passed to me under similar circumstances.   Fish that salmon rod!

That's a great story.  Thank you.

I have hoarding tendencies, and it's a constant battle to keep gear down to just what we need.  I love that he had ONE salmon rod and reel.  Even though I consider myself at just around the poverty level, we are all spoiled nowadays.  I have more stuff than I can possibly ever use.

A Tear and a Smile while reading your story. I am Blessed that my Dad ( 84 yo) still around . I talked to him yesterday and shared some stories about diving in the sixties, and still have and use the first ab iron he made me from a 67 Plymoth leaf spring. Thanks for sharing some special time.

Wow, NCKA is such a great group of people.  Your comments have helped me and I am sure others who have read them.

I wouldn't normally write a personal, emotional, story like this but  I was having difficulty dealing with my father's transition, and by extension, mine.  It turns out that writing the story and reading all the comments was cathartic.  There is still sadness but now also acceptence and gratefullness.
Thanks,
John

That's what it's all about. I still keep an old gun cleaning rag that my Dad used to clean his guns with after shooting. Still smells like the Hoppes gun solvent. Great memories every time I clean my guns.
