Never fished a trap from a yak. Looking for advice. I scored a cool little 18" by 9" pot from northwest kayak. Only 50 ft of sinking line and a buoy.  Can I throw normal non sinking line between the pot and the sinking line? Sounds like I need atleast 150 to fish monterey. What do you do with the line as you pull the pot? Stow it or let it back in the water till you clear the pot? I have fished pots off of larger boats but this will be my first year for Dungies off the yak.
I only fish on days that end with Y

There were some tutorials on here but I am on my phone and it's harder to look them up.

I use cheap light rope but put a small weight about 10-15 from the buoy.  It just helps keep the slack underwater so no boats cut the line with their propeller.

I use a plastic piece that's made for electrical cords to wrap the line around as I bring it up.  But I am usually done when pulling so don't want to leave the rest in the water.

Have fun and hope you get some.

Never done it out of Monterey before, but in HMB I always used floating line, just throw on some weight 10-15' below the buoy like DG said. I also keep the excess line wrapped around an extension cord holder like he was saying. Note that I said excess there. My buoys are just sliding on the main line, not tied in. I let out enough rope for depth+scope+tide changes and then tie off the excess on the wrapper.

When pulling I always throw the rope "behind" me in to the water. I usually pull on my right side, so the rope just goes on the back right of me. Way I figure, I dont want the rope to accidentally get caught on something on the yak etc and if I have to drop it, maybe flip me/tangle me in general. When I'm done pulling I throw the trap on my yak and then get to work wrapping the rope around the buoy + wrapping frame together as one. It ends up looking a lot messier, but the upside is that if the trap and line get knocked off overboard then the line will unravel and the buoy will float allowing for recovery. If you wrap it up tight on the frame thing, it won't always do that (experience here...). It's not for everyone, but that's how I do it.

The time spent pulling up a trap from 150 feet down in Monterey would be better spent driving to Half Moon Bay where you can get crab in 10-30 feet of water.

A crab trap will "walk" if it's got a lot of rope dangling from it and isn't weighted properly. And a trap that's properly weighted for 150 deep water will NOT be fun to pull up by hand in a kayak.

There are a bunch of guys that drive up to Halfmoon Bay from Monterrey to catch dungies.  They all tell me that it's faster to drive up the HMB and get limits than it is to paddle out in Monterrey and try to get limits.
