50ft isn't enough, unless your crabbing in 33FOW.

Thought 50 sounded a bit short.

   What's normal?  75, 100?

I want to get in on some of this too this season if things clear up.

I have my line broken down into 25' sections. Add on as needed. If you are crabbing off of Doran, 50' is usually enough. But I take 75 just in case.

Maybe start with a 50' base length & have 25' shots readily available.  Good idea.

I was under the impression we added 2 feet of line per 10 feet of depth. For swell and made a tide adjustment. Either way. Not arguing. This will be my first year crabbing and could use the advice. I will be crabbing in monterey pacific grove. Any suggestions.

Most dungies in those areas come from deep water (150-300 feet). That's a really tall task in a kayak. Probably easier (and safer) to head up the coast to HMB and give it a go there where there are more crab in shallow.

Yeah, Monterey even with a crab pot puller is a not-fun task.

Anyone know if the Santa Cruz Costco still has the traps in? Hoping to pick 4 of them up this weekend when in town for the Roots tourny.
  They were still there Saturday.

If you want to fish shallow change the game up and hoop net Lobsters. I did that last Thursday night and Friday Morning Came home with 6 and another friend from CCKF came home with 7 very nice ones. Channel Islands Harbor break jetty at the entrance from the Ocean. I hope to do it again in a couple weeks. we fished in maybe 30 ft of water at times 15 ft of water.  I can't imaging pulling 75 to 100 ft of rope.

Does anyone know how many pots you have out soaking per person?

Check out the nautical charts for that area. You're on the edge of a canyon wall and the ocean floor is STEEP off of Monterey/PG. There are spots where you're in 1000 feet of water just a mile offshore. In close and shallow, its too rocky and while you'll pick up rock crabs, there aren't many sand/mud flats that house dungies.
